That 1/2 looks so damn nice on the reverse !

And that is a coin with meat on her bones.

Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

    Same here.
Even a worn out, doggie 1797 half is still a desirable rarity.
That coin posted is amazing in every respect, as is the provenance, I’m sure.

i've only held one 1796 and 97 50c in-hand. both were raw, somewhat dogs in a dealers front pants pocket. vg-f or so.

hey lance, you wanna look at these.....speechless

so i live vicariously through these auctions until the day comes to hold a vf-xf. au probably won't happen w/o a lot viewing. probably not even vf-xf. good to have aspirations though.

Exquisite! You know me and my moderns, I thought you were talking about a 1997 coin. Lol
Your coin reminds me of a Soho coin I once had, the 1797 2 Pence.

Lance; Georgeous coin, but in this new world we have embraced, you'd have to investigate what JA did not like about the coin before you write a check for 200K+ tax ..... grade assigned or color maybe?

    .
good advice B) to do research, at least. if i wanted a coin or anything really and a friend, mentor, professional advised against, if i felt i had did my due diligence, i would proceed regardless. sometimes it bites me sometimes it pays in spades. like a lot of things, if you do it enough and do it right, your gains will exceed the loss. my biggest losses have been NOT listening to myself. fear, doubt, trusting the wrong people (not bad people) has cost me more than all of my risks/failures/losses combined. i say these things to be encouraging to others not that i wanted to go this direction with this thread. i truly believe it will be the things we don't do in this life that will haunt us, not the things we tried that didn't work out as planned. :)

i'm not bidding on this particular coin for me or anyone i know, just sharing a monster of a coin that we don't see often around here, except perhaps the hansen thread which in a round-about way, led to me that 97. this is intended to be a very fun and awe thread. :+1:

i will say even if there is something i'm missing on this coin, so long as it isn't major, it is a coin i could sit on for the rest of my life (along with a couple dozen other major rarities) and never regret having it or even being able to sell it. perhaps there are "better" examples, safer for the back end perhaps but if one does not intend to sell, only the heirs would know the difference and rarely do they have any skin in the game.

at the end, i'm glad you said what you did as not everyone is built like me and that sage advice is good for others to hear. BUT, now i will return to the pure joy of viewing this coin or at least the digital approximation of it. :p

Boy do I agree with THAT! My experience with the 1848-CAL quarter eagle lurnt me a lot!
    Price + sticker = GO
Price + no sticker + GO away.

    At least for me.
But it is purdy. So was my gold.

i've seen you post about it a couple times. do you have a link to the explanation thread?

i need some assistance as to why that wonderful coin is well, apparently not so wonderful.

i could see buying just about anything if the price was acceptable to me. i'd buy certain coins even if they'd been cut in half ,for several reasons.

as if some cac stickered coins haven't dropped 5-25% all on their own due to a lot of factors not related to the coins themselves (pops, markets, trends, coin politics). so buying a coin that doesn't sticker that may not be as worth as much to others as yourself, well you can still lose no matter the holder, no matter the sticker. odds are lower most likely but not enough for me to live or die by any one person or business.

perhaps this is where the definition of hobbyist and dealer truly separate? hobbies imo should cost us money, rarely make it. i'm eager to read why you could not just enjoy that lovely CAL coin. :)

one of my favorite all-time images i've seen in all of numismatics, the raw bust halves and other gold coins collected in simple plastic coin tubes. not very safe if you drop em but i greatly appreciate doing it that way.

do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do...

What I got was a piece of notepaper saying "something" was amiss with the ....dot.... area after CAL.
No one I showed it to could see anything wrong.
But why buy when the lack of sticker may be a hurdle later?

edited to add that I did not buy it for resale. It's a coin I wanted for years.....DECADES..
However, when I got it, the avalanche of queries if it was CAC just soured me on it.
Those were my reason. Don't really regret it. I learned what NOT to do.

I'm not a fan of the toning/color on that 1797, I would get a coin in a lower grade that I liked better and save some $ personally.
