The dies must have been work horses.

I wonder how many people can write like that today!!!

    I know that I can't..... never could.
The only cursive I use is when I sign my name.
Other than that, I print in all capitals.
My friends say I have carpenter's handwriting..whatever that means.
    I know I don't have carpenter's skills..... that's for sure.

Cool letter! And FWIW, when you get to a similar letter from 1893, I'm a buyer!

I think the only people that write like that today are artists / illustrators.

That's really neat. I never thought to wonder what it might cost to make a die.

I do pretty good with cursive, and I am sorting family letters from the mid 1800's.............so I'm still learning..it is like a different language. :)

The interesting part to me (aside from the beautiful handwriting), is the contingent costs, which I assume is for materials.... Seems incredibly cheap (even for that time) for what would be special steel. Cheers, RickO

    You got me thinking @ricko

So the $10.20 is 5.25% of the $ 194.40...............5 1/4 is quite a 'round' percentage.

    perhaps:
Cost contingency is an amount that is included in a budget to represent uncertainty. Projects and operational functions commonly run into unexpected expenses. This is so common that unexpected costs can be expected. As such, including a cost contingency in a budget is a standard practice in many industries.

Maybe they added 5.25% to all estimates?

@1630Boston ... Excellent point... I had not thought of that. Which would lead me to question where the cost of materials would be accounted for ....Cheers, RickO

    Maybe materials were billed separately?

@mothra454....Possibly...old bureaucracy?....Or maybe materials were supplied. Cheers, RickO

    Nothing like good old bureaucracy!

I found an interesting note about O.C. Bosbyshell, to whom the letter was sent. Apparently he was a civil war veteran, and the first Union soldier to be injured in the war.

It's about half a double eagle.

I think you may be able to get that at some cheaper places but not with the detail the Mint provides.
