When will shows return? - NJ/NY/CT

Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone knows when the coin/currency shows may return, specifically in the NJ/NY/CT area?

Wow! Really? Can't they (we) do something to limit indoor crowd numbers? Is this something you heard or read?

The coin shows in NYC should open about a year after NYC allows customers inside restaurants.

That's a great idea! You could also pick up rare error coins in the parking lot - that would make it a two-fer.

Weird thing..... Yesterday I drove by that venue around 10am and there was a guy dragging his roller suitcase (the type dealers use) away from the building which was clearly closed. I don't know if he was going to a bus stop or what.

The success of shows for those setting up (fixed cost hole to get out of) depends on strong crowd (good retail buyers) coming in with money to spend. Buying and selling at wholesale does not cut it in the coin business. Until covid off field (vaccine, cure) shows will be off line. Nor would it be prudent for one setup in current covid environment it seems. People need to grasp reality covid a killer and maimer.

I hope that older collectors and dealers and those with risk factors will choose caution and stay home.
Despite the size of the parking lot at Parsippany, I see no way to keep 6+ away from everyone unless there is a queue at the show entrance, one person at a time is allowed at a table and you back away when the dealer opens a case, etc. This seems totally impractical

I sure hope it doesn't rain! High wind would be nasty, too. Of course, the adjacent parking lots might provide nice spotter places for folks to see who might be buying or selling a nice coin and know exactly what car they are getting into so that they can be followed.

And, yes, I know exactly where the show is held and the layout (if it's still at the PAL) as I set up at this show from before it was hosted at this venue (when it was at the old wedding factory place down the highway in the early 1990s) through to its move to the PAL around 1995 and up until my table mate was followed after a show in 2010 or so and had his window smashed on the way home and contents stolen.

The new coin show protocol should for the dealers to open all their showcases and then step back at least six feet to let the folks wearing masks shop for nice coins.

I am astounded at the overall reaction to this virus. Never before (in my lifetime) have I seen such a reaction...and there have been several infectious outbreaks - i.e. deadly flu etc.. Cheers, RickO

I'm not so astounded at the reaction - it is justified. My nephew's entire family got it, his wife hit particularly hard - no, she's not elderly, only 39. She had pneumonia, and suffered quite a bit. Glad news - they've all recovered.

A good friend got it, was in the hospital for 18 days, out of workplace for two months.

The same message came from all of them - this is something you >> don't << want to get.

@ernie11 ..... Agreed....It is a serious affliction....However.. the H2N1 flu killed many, as did other flu outbreaks... and there were zero actions (shut downs, masks, distancing) taken to control the spread. Cheers, RickO

No way you will get everybody to comply with this. Even though in my state, it is a law to wear a mask in the store, many do not. And a large percent of the rest that do have a mask on, do not wear it properly. Too many careless people, and those who do not want to comply with the law. I am a senior citizen with a diabetic wife and an 88 year old dad living with me. So, I don’t look at this as people over reacting. I hate to even go to the store. No interest at all in any coin shows.

IF you have enough security for the show you will have people comply. Im sure the serious collector's will wear a mask properly to enter..

@ricko This thing is real and starting to hit close to home here. A lot of my late stepfathers family live right up the road from us. 5 of them got it and my Step Cousins Husband just died from it this morning after being on a ventilator for awhile. Another died a week or so ago that lives a mile from us. They were both in their early 60's.

I hope I'm wrong...but this thing might just have to work it's way through the population....I sure hope I'm wrong.

For now...I'm staying put as much as possible and wearing a mask anytime I get out of my car if I have to go somewhere.

Maybe there should have been some actions taken. Regardless, in this case, you’re ignoring the prolonged after effects and possible severe long term health problems for many who survive.

@Justacommeman... @amwldcoin...@MFeld... I am not downplaying or ignoring anything about this virus...I am saying the sudden and complete national action far exceeded anything in the past.... Early, before anyone had any inclination of how deadly it was or for whom, the world's greatest economy and functional industries were brought to a halt - shut down!! Unheard of before. I am just saying, look at the big picture, the anomalies... Dammit, you all look at a coin and can detect flea excrement.... turn that detailed examination toward the catastrophic condition of the United States right now. What did we do right, what should we plan on for the future - what if this is what biological warfare would look like?? We need to learn, understand, plan for the future. Cheers, RickO

I have two patients last couple weeks that were tested positive for the Covid. One has a wife that is a very strong conspiracy theorist and refused to wear a mask or social distance. She came home first with the illness (positive symptoms) and then he got it soon thereafter, and became quite ill, and now the kids are sick. All positive.
I believe they will all survive but the marriage, not so sure.

I have similar stories that are in my orbit. It’s why I was always worried about how we in the US would respond to a pandemic. We aren’t built for it. As a nation we have no unified plan or mandate but we have our freedom so there is that. No one can tell us what to do. We also have 180K deaths and counting.

Anyways, I’m not interested in any coin shows or gatherings of more then 10 people or so just yet. I’ve seen what this insidious virus can do.

‘Bout the only thing that we can agree on is that not everyone agrees. In my line of medicine I don’t see it at all. My buddy who is an RT turns the ventilator off of 3-4 terminal people a week. We have pretty different visceral reactions to it. Are we both right or both wrong?

By the numbers, we should be far more terrified of heart disease (and plenty of other things), but we’ve already accepted and grown accustomed to that....... and many of the risk factors for that one are simple lifestyle choices.

If the total are area under the curve ends up being the same irrespective of location, in the end it won’t matter much if we got there quickly (New York) or got there slowly (Hawaii). Death rates in NY state are now virtually zero and have been for weeks on end.

It is currently impossible to know if it’s better to simply let it run its course and be done with it or be über-careful in the hopes of an effective vaccine or treatment. Later, we will know, and an unpredictable half of us may have been completely wrong. Most likely the best course will be somewhere between the “truths” of the fear-mongers and the “Truths” of the Liberty-or-die types. We’re all programmed to be at a different point on that axis by our natures & beliefs.

Of course, none of that large-population-medicine matters to individuals and families who are suffering greatly.

I’ve already been to a coin show in the midst of this, I work around it, and I’ve recently flown through major airports. It concerns me enough to be careful, but not paralyzed. All the same, I’m fully willing to give those who are terrified or vulnerable the courtesy of a little respect.

Sorry to do this but these people have been great to us and they really deserve a mention.

Awesome stuff, bulk lots, keeps it all interesting. Shipping is the most secure packaging I've ever received for coins. I'd recommend trying to shop semi local online. You support your friends and neighbors and their families, too. I hope you get to enjoy your coin shows again soon.
