Proof Indian Head Cents

As one who collects silver coinage primarily, and looking to shift into copper, I'm pondering on a complete set of proof IHC. Yes, a set will be somewhat expensive but it will be unique. I have my eye on two currently up for auction. This one is my first choice.

While the price is a bit high for the date, the overall color is speaking to me. Add in the subtle reverse rainbow toning and I'm thinking it deserves a slight premium.

The second is also a nice looking example, again fairly common but about right on price.

So, I guess that I'm looking for some thoughts as to which would be the better from your view point. Or should I hold off in the hopes of a better price on a similar specimen?

I like the first one, 1903 PCGS PR65RD better, but keep in mind that pricing can go higher. If by chance you choose the second one, when you call DLRC, they will offer it to you at a lower price than the current offering price, since it has already completed one of their auctions, and no one wanted it. Ask them for the original reserve price, and negotiate down from there.

Separately, compare the comments DLRC made for each coin. That should give you some insight too to select the 1903.

    Good luck.

I like the first one ... I also like the seller!

The first coin would be my pic. The seller is also on my list of good guys to deal with.

Spots on the cheek and forehead kill the second for me. Go for #1

As a collector of toned proof IHCs.....

I, personally, wouldn't spend the extra markup for RD examples. Never know if they will tone to some degree, even if they haven't in "100+ years". If they do, and it isn't a nice toning, you lose.

I like the RB and BN examples, particularly if there is some attractive toning.

I avoid any that have a lot of carbon spots...especially if in prime focal areas.

And, at least in the BN examples, the price guides are off (WAY OFF when toning is involved).

You can spend a lot, or you can spend a fair amount. Some nice examples in the 63-64 grades can be had. 65 and above really start climbing in price. Some nice lookers can be found in 62 as well. Not really the RD though.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Oh, btw, if toned, CAC can be hard on them. Really hard.

Of those two, I like the first one, also.
There’s a handful on GC closing in the next day to next few weeks. I didn’t look at them all, but they might be worth a gander if you haven’t already ruled them out.

I’m skeptical of RD examples in brand new slabs ... but I’m jaded.

Just find a RB that is mostly RD instead.
