Why such a low grade

I recently submitted this 1963 Jefferson nickel thinking it might grade pretty good according to their own color charts can anyone give me any insight on why this nickel only received a grade of a pu 55

Welcome Warren. With that pic it's too hard to access. Would need a front and back with perhaps daylight lighting. Are you using an incandescent bulb? What is a PU? And what color chart are you referring to?

Perhaps just enough rub on the cheek and hairline to warrant an AU grade.
The upside is it did grade and thus is a plus for toned Jefferson nickels.
Would be nice to see the Reverse also.

Slight wear. Even without the wear the cheek is dinged enough to rate low MS.
Did you cut it out of a mint set? Just curious how you came by it.
I'd also like to see the reverse.
Freudian slip?
Might be a label error. Here are same examples.
Label says 1954, coin says 1954-S

Here's another from same seller.

There's a MS68 with way too many nicks to grade that high. It has to be a label error.
Give them a call and make your case especially if the coin came right out of a mint or proof set. Or even a uncirculated nickel roll.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

Might be. Far more likely that the coin has rub and the OP didn't properly assess the grade. The top of the hair looks to have a scuff in the photo. There also appear to be rim dings near "WE", "Trust" and the date. Not to mention a plethora of contact marks on the cheek.
I'm guessing the coin is, in fact, an AU55.
I suspect luster gone and rub on rear above Monticello steps
@Nwarren31001.... Welcome aboard.... Not sure what 'color charts' you are referring to... but the coin has wear and marks which, based on only the obverse, could relegate it to AU...Cheers, RickO
Okay let me see if I can answer all these questions first time trying to upload the reverse side I'm having trouble I thought I'd loaded for 5 pictures in the beginning but obviously I did and know this did not come out of a proof set I found it in general circulation. And from the best of my understanding PU grade is classifying it as a proof coin I guess, but I didn't realize it was a proof coin and the color chart I'm referring to is the one on the PCGS app
There is no grade of PU. If you sent it to PCGS and they thought it was proof it would receive a PR designation, if they thought it was a business strike and had a tiny bit of wear it would come back as AU. So, is it PR or AU?
