AT coins that are not MA. Do these ever change to MA

I was wondering if any of these coins ever get to be MA over a period of time. Do these coins get dipped or do most of them get thrown in the junk pile?

  • Get dipped and sold cheap or junk pile depending how heavy the AT toning is. If its very thick to give it that ugly all blue/purple look, often not going to come off with just a quick dip. Just my 2c

I would not expect blatant AT to ever become market acceptable. But then again, years ago, I would never have thought colorized coins would be acceptable.

Depending upon the nature of the AT, there is no fixing them really. If you dip them they’ll just be lifeless coins with either no color or some milder color.

This question cannot be answered with a simple yes or no because it depends on many factors. First coin grading is highly subjective with todays market grading so what is AT today can be MA tomorrow. Also it will depend on the method and what was applied to the coin, some can be removed very easily some not so. And lastly what is under the AT as often coins are AT'd to hide some other issue.

I had a friend that sent a coin in to our host and it came back AT. He left it in the holder and tucked it away for about 5 or 6 years. He was sending some stuff in so he cracked it and sent it again, it came back with a grade.

I would have to say "yes" things change over time.

As mentioned, it depends on the coin (as is always the case).
Some are borderline to begin with, so it might grade QC the first time and then get a straight grade the next time. Other coins were considered AT but the standards have loosened/changed and those might straight grade too. The most blatant of the AT coins I doubt will ever change to MA.

Thank you for saying exactly what I would have tried to say.

There AT coins in slabs and there are NT coins that have been rejected as QC.... And, as noted above, some rejects have later slabbed.... The entire tarnish issue is fraught with issues.... And frankly, I cannot understand why premiums are paid for tarnish....never has made sense to me. I just chalk it up to 'what collectors like'....heck, people collected beanie babies...never understood that fad either. Cheers, RickO

AT becomes MA if the M so desires.

Everything is MA if you price it right.

AT could be MA if it is the non-details holder. It would probably benefit the AT coin if it was out of a holder so that it could breathe and soak up some of the surrounding area.

These are raw coins, but I believe the market would not accept the Ike dollar, but it might accept the Lincoln cent.

I recall back when eBay was just starting out using a WebTV and flipping "rare" (the original eight) Beanies on that site right and left. I'd purchase them (usually from an auction whereas the seller had misspelled the Beanie's name thus drawing few bids) and immediately re-list them. Not a big deal yet netted 10K in four months. This was back at the end of 1996, going into 1997.

I still have a few in the garage as the market crashed hard about a year or two into it.

I would be more inclined to think the ike would be more MA than the cent.
