Proof or not?

joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 16,209 ✭✭✭✭✭

I picked this beautifully toned Roosie awhile back. How can I tell if it's a Proof or business strike? There does seem to be a slight Cameo on the reverse, if that even is a Cameo? but the obverse is too difficult to determine. Thanks guy's. :)

Look for a mirrored surfaces on the coin. That‘s about all I have for you. From the pics it doesn’t look like it but it’s so hard to tell.

You've bought and posted Proof coins before, so you know what they look like. I don't understand why, with the coin in hand, you can't tell. But based just on the photos, the lack of design detail says business strike to me.

@joeykoins Have you looked at photograde between MS and PR? Could be helpful :)

Rims look too rounded, not flat enough.
Compare to other proofs of same date. Look

    I say business strike

This is a good question, actually, because the finish on 1964 proof coins is unusually variable. @cmerlo1 started a good discussion about this:

They may have a finish that is satiny, rather than brilliant, so it can be tricky to tell if the coin is no longer in the original proof packaging. The more satiny coins can sometimes look confusingly close to business strikes, IMO.

Initially, I thought it was proof, based on how the details pop on the obverse (esp. "LIBERTY"), but now I think it is a business strike, based on the weak detail on the reverse (esp. "UNITED STATES" and the rim below "DIME").

I vote business strike. So far, I like the toning. Better pictures are in this coin's future?

Based on the pictures, it is a business strike. Lack of detail, rims - especially the reverse rims - no mirror fields... Cheers, RickO
