The allure of the 2-coin holders

cardinalcardinal Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭✭✭

An image is an image, and the PCGS TrueView images are awesome for what they are. They are virtual images. You can’t actually touch them unless they’re printed. But, how about a physical manifestation of those images? Wouldn’t that be better for a display?

This is why I like the 2-coin holder! It’s a physical 3D TrueView, like these (recently re-holdered):

What do you think?

I think for folks who like them that it is a great option. I am not a fan, however, as they are awkward to store and fabulously illiquid if you have to move them quickly. In my opinion, it isn't much of a hardship to flip a coin over to view each side individually.

I understand that from a dealer's perspective, where you WANT someone to ask to see a coin, and view it in their own hands, to create a sale. I am not a dealer myself.

I do, however, create educational displays at coin shows, and invariably someone would want to see the reverse side, requiring opening a case handing over a coin, and keep eye contact with them until they hand it back. Using these holders, the viewer sees both sides at the same time - even when the case is locked.

There are occasions and sets where the allure is strong for me. . Out of the realm for this forum, but to illustrate.

Does PCGS make a four coin holder? I have several Maundy sets that would good in them. Since they are almost always sold as a set not being able to sell individually isn't an issue.

There are a couple different sizes available, a call to customer service may be in order to see if they can accommodate you.

I see there are Presidential sets on eBay, with 4 coins in one single holder!

I think it’s very cool for collector and display purposes. I don’t own anything duplicate enough to put in a holder like that, but those matching ones are neat. Maybe if you had a worn coin and a perfect coin you could put them together, too. Like a top pop and bottom pop. Probably not liquid, but cool for a collection.

Let's take this in a different direction for a moment...

Imagine the younger head George II 1732 proof crown and the old head 1746 proof crown in the same holder... Now that would be stunning

And I suppose one could say the same thing for the commercial issues for those seeking an example of each type.

    I like the idea...

    Something like this?

I always thought the Eliasberg 1884 & 1885 trade dollars should be in one

A few days ago, PCGS customer service told me they do not make multiple coin holders, I asked in reference to having a 1955 proof set in a 5 coin holder and was told no. NGC used to have multiple coin holders, I have two of them.

The multiple coin holders represent a small fraction of the holders used by PCGS, so I can understand that some of the customer service people are unaware of them.

The main allure to me is that they float ;)

Great presentation @cardinal! I really appreciate your collector enjoyment focus vs. resale focus on these!

i like multiholders. I think it would be cool to have a 3 coin holder with the 1943 Steel cents. Thats just off top of my head

There’s already a 3-coin holder, and they were used for the 2016 Centennial gold Mercury dime, Liberty Standing quarter, and Liberty Walking half dollars.

This was a cool one by NGC. I think there might have been one with more coins, too. When I went looking for it I thought there was a PCGS one, but now I’m thinking I was wrong.

Yes, NGC did a number of combinations for sets!

For a while, I had this one, but sold it in 2010:

I still have this one, and it's been 21 years!

I saw one of these on eBay a few weeks ago but it's gone now and I haven't seen another since. Very neat looking holder. Are these very scarce? I assume it was a limited issue by PCGS.

Jwitten has a unique three coin set created specifically for him by PCGS that's very cool. It shows the die progression of the 1927 quarter eagle---normal, die crack, and retained cud.

The multi-coin holders are nice for various types of displays - several of which are shown above. Certainly provides focus for collectors of specific interests. I would think they are a bit more difficult to sell for two reasons, price and collector focus. Cheers, RickO
