I found an odd dime with what appears to be a backwards R

I found this going through a friend's collected change and have never seen something like this just wondered if anyone has any ideas or knowledge. I can try getting a better picture but this might be the best I can do sorry.

I do not see what you are (R) referring to... The picture needs clarity and perhaps an indicator to the area in question. Cheers, RickO

Were you looking at it in a mirror?

I think I see what you are referring to... but without clear sharp photos can give no opinion on it.

  • Here's some more attempts at pictures. If you guys have a suggestion of what to take better pictures with I'd welcome suggestions. I'm sorry I'm somewhat new to this and I apologize for not clarifying earlier the R is on the torch

Thanks for additional photos... shows better detail but still inconclusive. Does look interesting. Is the 'R' raised metal? Or... is it depressed into the design? Any other oddities or damage elsewhere on the coin?

Not sure how you are taking pictures... if using phone, not sure how to get sharper photos with it. Many of the forum members have cameras that are capable of taking focused closeups... if interested for future use, one can search the forum for threads that recommend some good ones to use. But of course... that doesn't do you much good for now.

Also... are there any 'sharp' ridges along the edges of the 'R'? which could indicate damage from some sort or impact or punching...

One additional comment.... your post is showing "accepted answer". Others who might be able to give some good comments on the question, may not even be looking at the thread since they think your question has been resolved to your satisfaction...

Oh. I didn't realize (or know how) I did that. I guess I accidentally pressed yes instead of no to the guy who asked if I was looking in a mirror... ok I didn't realize I guess that would happen. Thanks for letting me know.

The R is the only oddity I see and it is raised. I have taken this to a friend of my grandpa who works at a coin shop so I'm just trying to see if I can find any info since the three of us had never seen anything like it.

If you do find a way to take better photos closeup... keep us updated! I'm curious as to what it is also. Usually, these type of things are due to PMD (post mint damage), but there are cases where some legitimate varieties are found. For instance, there are coin varieties where extra details were 'engraved' into the coin die at the US Mint (though HIGHLY unlikely for your coin). Most likely it is coin damage of some sort, but only way to tell is very good photos.

Also, sometimes something is stuck onto the coin. Glue spots/deposits fool many individuals.
