Yes, old reliable PCGS. I don't care if it's an old school holder or a brand new one. Dependability! I couldn't believe what I paid on top of it. Just any coin in an PCGS old school holder, is worth the money. Toning to boot. Love it. Not the best looker but still vintage.

imaging toned coins in direct sunlight light like that will make the toning appear dead flat and unappealing.

i do like toned coins in rattlers, especially for modest toning price.

@joeykoins ---Are you aware that the first generation PCGS slab (rattler) was counterfeited? That is why PCGS brought out the doily style slab with enhanced security features.

I love how a rattler makes it feel as if you’re able to get a bit closer to the coin compared to a modern holder. I hate the rattle as it always makes me feel as if the coin is getting damaged, though I know it isn’t. I also don’t like how it feels as if a rattler will instantly shatter if dropped on a hard surface. But overall rattlers are pretty cool.

I feel more at ease holding a rattler than an old ANACS. They're so tiny in hand.

JMHO, I can understand if you want an old rattler for its nostalgia, but there are quite a few out there. a better course may have been to be patient and wait for a rattler that encapsulates a much nicer coin. trust me, that will make you happier in the end although it might cost a little more.

Personally I’m not a fan of the coin and old holders do very little for me, but it’s hard going wrong spending $15 on a silver coin. Heck, I had lunch today at the kosher deli and spent more money on a corned beef sandwich.

  • BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,405 ✭✭✭✭✭

I love seeing some of the "more seasoned" members carping on a member's $15 buy, that he bought for the holder.

The coin, from the photos, does nothing for me either, and I got out of "needing"/"wanting" rattlers a few years ago, but, far be it from me to look down on anyone else's discretionary income buy, particularly when it is that low, for something they like.

Hell, I've spent $75-$100 on a "impulse - just for fun" coin purchase and I really didn't/don't care if anyone else liked it or not.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Although there is no way to tell for sure, looks like the coin could have possibly came from an original mint set, although I do not really care to much for the toning, I would have also bought it for $15.

Thanks guy's! Yeah, I know the coin itself has seen better days, still wondering how and why PCGS graded it a 66? Just noticed though, when I twisted the coin in a certain direction, the beautiful tone came out! Totally, changed the coin's appearance when I did that. From my standpoint, coin in hand, the darn thing actually looked pretty good. Lol. Oh well, thanks to all again. ;)

I like it. I suspect the pics negatively reflect on the actual coin (especially the largest view). I suspect the luster and toning is much better in hand. I am not a fan of most of the OP's selections, but on this one, I think you did very well on an old school MS66.

Personally I think the pics are not doing this coin any favors. I’ll bet it looks MUCH better than the pics let on.

There are very, very few holders for which this statement is true. NGC black? Yes. PCGS Regency? You got it. PCGS doily? Not going to argue. PCGS white-label rattlers? Yeah. Regular old rattler? Nope. The holder is far too common, especially with appealing coins, to make a sweeping statement that a coin should be purchased regardless of the coin inside.

Actually, that statement is false for the premium holders you cite. The coin is not worth the money. The holder is. All the coin does is make the holder more expensive if it happens to be nice. The OP coin in an NGC black holder would sell for over $100, but it's still a $15 coin, uncollectible as what it is.

"If you buy what you like, at a price you can afford at the time, then things will be easier. If you buy what other people like, borrow to fund it and expect multiple of return, then you are likely to be unhappy. Bongo say nearly everything depreciates over time. Bongo would not pay $500 for a silver bell this Christmas and expect it to be worth $550 next year, but Bongo knows a Silver Bell is not old coin. Or is it? Bongo maybe not surprised that old coin is like any other limited non essential commodity and subject to the whims of taste and market. Put the coin in book and enjoy it. If it is worth more when you come to sell it, well done. If not, then you have had enjoyment out of it. Remember that old coin is only worth a few dollars in physical material value – This is why value is an esoteric concept in many ways and it may be vulgar to assign any monetary value to old coin unless you are a Russian Oligarch or Chinese shoddy goods factory owner."

I bet it looks better in hand and it is housed in a nice old slab. I could think of a lot worse ways to spend 15 bucks. It’s $15.....there is so little risk here, anyway.
