For all the coins I have dug over 26+ years, never a silver dollar but I have plucked several halves, almost all from under large trees. Pocket spills are always exciting. Have a good day. Peace Roy

I have not... but there is a local MD'r whom I know who found both a Barber half and a Morgan in a field just a block away from where I live....Large lot, was once part of a historical home that is still there (old stone house - http://www.saugertieshistoricalsociety.com/) built in 1727. He also found an old silver napkin holder (likely lost in a picnic) with the initials of an early owner of the home. Many have MD'd the field, but mostly find modern coins/jewelry since it is used by sports teams and other activities. Cheers, RickO

I would imagine that local has a lot to do with it.
For instance, in your area, I would expect more MDers to find half cents/large cents than I would someone out midwest/west. Sure, the early silver dollars may be there, but, they are/were large and harder, possibly, to "lose"....and also had a lot more buying power.

Midwest/west, I would expect a better chance of finding the silver dollars (particularly the morgans). But, even then, it would depend on the type of place they would be lost...and what that place may be like, for MDing even these days. Ie.....old west? Out on the range? If someone lost them out there, that is a lot of open space and it could still very well be open range today which most detectoring type folks likely wouldn't prioritize.

Just my thoughts. Size, and purchasing power, have a lot to do with how much effort someone would put into NOT losing something....and locale has a good amount to do with what may be more prevalent in an area.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've found 3 Barber halves, 4 Walking Liberty halves, one 40% Kennedy, and several clad halves. I've never dug a silver dollar, although I've dug one clad Ike dollar and more than a few modern dollar coins.

Been detecting over 30 years. I found one, a 1901-S at an abandoned fairgrounds.

Years ago, while detecting in Baltimore's, Patterson Park, among other coins, I found 2 Walkers. My cousin found a very worn Morgan.

  • I have found 23 Sacagawea dollar coins and four Ike's. One find was four Sacagawea's in the same spot.

    @metaldetectinghound3 .... Wow... four Ike's..... That is amazing...Cheers, RickO

No silver dollars, one clad (non-silver) kennedy half, been detecting over 30 years. I did find an old casino/reservation trade dollar that was 38mm once at a beach site, thought I really had something- but it was from the late 80's - 1980's that is.

  • TreashuntTreashunt Posts: 6,747 ✭✭✭✭✭

    I have found two:

One at a beach 04/17/1993, a Morgan - XF, dark, slight rim ding, due to the scoop.
I got a hit, dug it up and ran like heck, since a giant wave was coming right at me.

I couldn't believe it when I shook out the sand.

Second one: At my sister-in-law's house, in her driveway. house build in 1796 [! yes that date is correct].
I pulled out a Morgan dollar and my stupid brother-in-law grabbed it so fast I never even got to see the date.
he was/is an idiot, not even a thank you.

Living proof you can’t pick your relatives. Sometimes not even in-laws. I hope it was a 21 Morgan and you put a big scratch on it😀😀

Zero for a silver dollar. 1 Walker and one 40% 1 Ike on a soccer field

I found one since 1979 a nice Morgan it was under a tree in a local park. I remember that day because I also found a silver half, silver quarter, silver dime and a silver nickel and the kicker was a 14K gold ring. All under the same tree. Since then I have found a French coin 1783 that is larger then a silver dollar and the topper was a $5.00 gold... Back in the 80s we would find one to two dollars every day in silver . Its alot harder now finding silver.....but its around....

Nope but I did find a 1853 dime that was so nice you could clearly read the word liberty on her shield! Also found 169 civil war bullets that day! Those were the days!

@alexerca ... Wow ... 169 civil war bullets... Where were you detecting? Gettysburg? Cheers, RickO

  • I started metal detecting in about 1974. Kept track of my finds for several years until I got over 10000 coins. Only found 1 silver dollar but have found over 100 Indian Head pennies and over 100 barber dimes. also several barber halves. I haven't hunted much for several years.

@IHCFAN...Wow...that is quite an impressive find history....What type of silver dollar did you find?? Cheers, RickO

  • It was a Morgan but I don't remember the date. In recent years have found a couple Susan B Anthony dollars. Back in the 70s & 80s it was a bad day if I didn't find an IHC or barber dime.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Thanks for the response.... A Morgan Dollar find while metal detecting would be second only to a gold coin for most MD'rs..... Cheers, RickO

I have yet to dig up any silver coins. Granted this is only my second season detecting. I have found some jewelry but I’m anxious to find my first Merc or Barber dime. I plan on going out on Monday since I don’t have to work that day. It’s suppose to be a nice Autumn day too.

No silver dollars for me. I did find one SBA dollar, and various "golden" modern dollars. My buddy Nate pulled a peace dollar about 5 feet from me as we were walking back to the car one day. He also found a Capped Bust Half dollar in one of our hunts. Hopefully one day one will show up for me.

I did find a Sac and a prezzie dollar in the coinstar a week ago....never found a dollar coin MD'ing. I am mainly a cache hunter, so old homesteads etc., likely no new dollar coins, but always hopeful for the old, big silver. Cheers, RickO
