I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the heavy usage of the internet. The timing is pretty close with many schools beginning online classes.

I think it’s the use of pop-up blockers. When I turn mine off, all the avatars are there. When they’re on, most of the avatars disappear.This is using Safari.

Interesting theory, but no. You'd be far more likely to see missing photos, which are much larger files.

No problem previously, but now they're gone for me. Forum software gremlins, IMO.
And, 30 seconds later, most of them are back, but not all.
