1980 Unopened Basketball box Sells for new high

Setting what I believe is a new record price this sold last night for $25k:

https://sports.ha.com/itm/basketball/1980-topps-basketball-wax-box-with-36-unopened-packs-magic-bird-rookie-year-/a/50028-56836.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515

Last year they went for around $7k and this one wasn’t even an FASC example it came from Frisch.

Always one of my favorite sets, what other great 1980 basketball is out there? I wonder if any cases still exist?

There are 2 boxes on eBay right now -- both BBCE (NOT FASC). Anyone know the avg. number of Bird/Erving/Johnson you get in a box? Problem is that card has so many things that can go wrong -- black print line bottom right, black ink smudges across the middle, bad centering, registry out of focus especially on the Erving card. For $25K I'd rather buy 5 PSA 8's or maybe one PSA 9 + one PSA 8 -- a Bird in the hand... (pun intended :) )

I think you get 4 or 5 per box and in 1981 you get 3 or 4 of each bird and Magic.

Wow that would be a fun rip.

Imagine having bought a box for $7k last year. Crazy.

You only get 2, maybe 3 per box... sometimes only 1. Even less of the solo rookies. Lots of the leaders and All Stars, though. The non-Fritsch box sold for way less.

Of course these boxes are going to explode and why wouldn’t they? The Bird Magic RC in a 9 is selling for $20k and 8’s are selling for $5k. I remember when Bird Magic in a 9 was selling just a tad over $700. 😂

You’ll be lucky to pull 2 out of a box of 80-81 of the Bird Magic , but in 81-82 I would say Timmer is right on the 3-4 a box on both Larry & Magic. I love the 81-82 Bird. Magic is a very low pop in 81-82 in 9’s and especially 10’s.

I’ve ripped and seen a lot ripped over the years on both 80-81 & 81-82

I bought the last one Steve had at the National last year for $5,400. And for nostalgia I got the price sign he had with it. Lol..... me lucky

i wonder how many boxes the people on this forum have in total.

we should start a poll and tally it up.

Wow. Forgot I bought 8 fasc from steve a couple of years ago at the national. We ripped 1 that night in the hotel. 4 per box is about right with one on back showing. Back right stack 4 packs down.

I paid $3400 for my 80 box. Should have hoarded more.

I just cant understand this price. Dang more power to you if money is moving this way. But man. A 1959 Cello Box sold the same day for 59,000.00. SO basically for only 2 1980 BK boxes worth. OMG. And I would guess that 1980 BK box was bought to be opened even at that price.
I would take 10 1959 Cello Boxes over a full case of 1980 BK(Id guess a premium for a full case). DANG!!!

Just for the record, there's 8 cards in a pack... 4 from the * sheet, 4 from the ** sheet. Each sheet has 132 cards, 44 of which are double printed... including the Bird/Magic card (the solo rookies are single printed). Since there's 144 cards from each sheet in a box you "should" only get 2 Bird/Magics. Of the two Bird/Magic cards on the sheet, one (the left one) has the potential to have the crop mark below Magic if cut centered.

Aren’t their 24 cards per pack? And 36 packs per box?

Each card has 3 panels. So if you separate them you get 24 cards in a pack

You must have gotten a special box, I have never seen 4 out of a box or even 3. The max have seen out of a box has been 2. With a POP of 23 I can see a PSA 10 selling for close to $250K

    I pulled 4 out of a box about 15 years ago. 3 PSA 9s and 1 8.

One sold at REA spring auction for $10,800 before the increase with a bird/Johnson pack listed as showing on the BBCE label. It was flipped quickly on eBay. That was probably a good short-term investment. 😀

Glad I did. That was enough to keep the other 7 sealed. Considering what boxes are pulling now, I might have to put one up.

Back in January the Bird/Magic rc in a psa 7 could still be had for under $400, now in the $16-1800 range. A psa 8 could be had for under $1000, now at $5000. Wow, both up 4-5x plus in 7 months. Crazy!

Kicking myself for letting these go a while back...A similar PSA 8 pack just sold for 5X what I got when I sold each of them...

    ..
    ...

But I believe I have another that I've found that will be graded, tbd. I hope to show it by this time 2021.

Agreed. And will only continue to rise quickly and exponentially.

Don't want to regurgitate all the reasons why, but if Manfred's poor decision about how to return, the fact that there most likely won't be NCAA or NFL season unless bubbled and the fact that the NBA did it right will convert a ton of other sports guys back to watching basketball if for the only reason it's going to be the only thing on.

I was really excited to see Soto vs Acuna yesterday. But nope.

Now Im really excited to see Morant and Zion on the court in just a few.

Mix all the above with the fact that there will be almost zero break in basketball action w the delay from this year, then draft then right back in to the next season.

These prices are music to my ears as I’ve spent the last 10 years trying to put together the best Bird and Magic unopened collection out there.

Since the last dance started it seems like prices have increased 100% every month or so.

Can it keep going at this rate?

I find it hard to keep buying but I’m not selling either so maybe it does?

Bought a lot off eBay unseen last year. Basically someone opened two boxes, tore apart about 40-50 cards into panels; and then it ended up on ebay.

Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

Good luck, I know there's competition out there! 😉

  • That was a great purchase at 3400 UFFDA. What year was that purchase?

1980 Basketball was the first basketball set i used to purchase in packs, at a mom and pop store where I live. I remember hitting a Bird/magic rookie but tore all the cards in threes. Best thing I liked about those packs back then was the mini team posters.

    Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

I bought a box like 15 yrs ago for $1k and sold it to D&A a few months later at $1.2k. I thought I made a good profit. A case sold for $20k like 20 yrs ago, i thought that was way overpaid.

  • UFFDAHUFFDAH Posts: 2,014 ✭✭✭✭✭

    @Maschmit - I think I bought my box in 2015 or so.

    Still have it!!

  • SammyCSammyC Posts: 117 ✭✭

Seems like there are plenty of these boxes out there. I doubt the next one will sell for $25k again. :(
