The best designed coin dealer website

scubafuelscubafuel Posts: 1,870 ✭✭✭✭✭

In this era of no coin shows, it seems pretty important for a dealer to have a well designed site set up for e-commerce. Good, clear photos, simple layout that puts the coins first, and inventory that doesn't sit for years and years. I've visited them all, and to me the winner by far is Coin Rarities Online (CRO). Sorry if it sounds like an ad, and I do enjoy buying (and selling) with John, but his site is the only one I'll go to even when I'm not actively buying, just to window shop! If you haven't visited I highly recommend it.
The combination of beautiful, interesting coins, professional photography, infinite scroll and nothing hidden behind overly specific menus (want to see Jefferson nickels, and only Jefferson nickels? Tough) not only offers up coins that may be within your wheelhouse, but also gives you a chance to say "Cool, what is THAT??"

Which of course a big part of what makes coin collecting so much fun.

I'm a big fan of the CRO website and it's my favorite. I love being able to scan the inventory and see many photos together. Some things that I miss there include:

    • reverse slab photo
    • historical price archive

Other sites are not as easy for me to use.

Major downers on other sites include:

    • clicking between page numbers
    • scrolling without seeing lots photos, e.g. list format vs. grid format

I'm biased but this is what I'd like to see. Yeah, it's a specialty site focused on a particular series. But I love being able to scroll through his coins without having to bounce around from page to page.

CRO, EAC, and HLRC are all very good. They keep it simple. Sheridan Downey's site is also very good and quite educational.

It’s a nice, clean site, for sure. Sometimes less is more. Fantastic imaging, too.

For me, I personally don’t mind choosing a series and scrolling through the related inventory. There are many series I have little interest in, and prefer to have things filtered down a bit.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

I use their website and have purchased a number of pieces from them, but some constructive feedback is that their website can really use a grid layout like CRO has for easy scanning. Even in sections I follow, I feel I can't visually scan all the offerings and only look for a few with by searching for keywords. This probably means I miss a lot of what may otherwise interest me.

I too have made some good purchases from them.

My productivity plummets on certain Tuesdays when I receive a CRO Early Bird Notification. By far my favorite email subject line!

Harry Laibstain Rare Coins. They've got an ad here on the site. They treated me with respect (big purchase) and kindness (good humans) so I went to check their site. They upload new inventory when it comes in and when it sells. No scrolling through the same 500 pieces of garbage I tried so very hard to forget about. Their stuff is either there or it isnt and everything moves so fast so if it sucks it's gone very soon after me passing on it. Its like how APMEX should be. The layout is great too.

I agree with the posters above. The CRO and DWN site are streamlined and intuitive. Less is more.

I do like CROs site along with HLRC. They work well because they don't have hundreds of coins listed for sale.

I also like Gerry Fortin's site. There is so much educational material, especially for his specialty, Seated Dimes. I've spent hours on the site looking through his material and studying it.

David Kahn, easy to negotiate. Photos are excellent. Descriptions accurate, he is very knowledgeable in what he sells.

I’ve always found DLRC easy to use. I’ll check out the others.

Agree - I like the “make an offer” feature too.

I stopped looking at his site a couple of years ago because the photos were not very good. I'll have to check back in to see the change. Thanks for the update, bustie.

I have a few quibbles with their site. No search function upon entering the site. Non-intuitive position of the close button, small targets for navigation to what you want to see. Quality content, though
