I’ve seen this brought up before on the forum and I’ve wondered myself so I went looking to see if I could find a nice summary (of sorts) of the purchasing power of money for various goods in American history segregated by decade. I found this wonderful compendium of information that provides quick access to a lot of that information. It also has wage information for the time.
Hope it helps someone out. I certainly bookmarked it...

You really could get lost in all that stuff.
Wow... what an amazing trove of information......Very interesting... and, in some ways, concerning. Have bookmarked that site for what will likely be frequent visits. Thank you...Cheers, RickO
Sears catalog 1922 - page 813:
Colt's 45-Caliber Automatic" under "Miscellaneous Police Goods" $34
Can get a Colt 1911 around $1000 today, but $34 of gold from 1922 worth over $3k.
