Heads-up about a hack.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

I thought I should warn or otherwise notify everyone that my e-mail and several accounts of mine have been hacked. If I had your e-mail address, web-site or any information saved in a message you may get an e-mail from me, probably asking for help getting some GiftCards or other stuff like that. I spoke with a friend this morning who's message was in my "Trash" and the hacker(s) had used it for that purpose. If you get something like that from me please ignore it and notify me via PM. I have already changed my profile so I get no "e-mail notifications" about anything. It took awhile but most accounts have either been changed or locked. :s

I'm sorry if this has adversely affected anyone here. Please accept my apologies if it has and I'll do whatever I can to help.

Al H.

Happens quite a bit. I reflexively block such notices.

I just hope you never get marooned in an Indonesian whore-house, and really need my money to buy your ticket home.

@keets No need to worry about me. I'll always ignore your emails. :)

More seriously , this sounds like an incredible bother. I hope you get through it quickly and as painlessly as possible.

finally, after more than four days I was able to reset my e-mail password. how ridiculous. I have either cancelled accounts or had them locked until I could get the e-mail done, apparently there was problem with the "Password Reset" function with the ISP, Spectrum. now I guess I wait and make sure everything is secure.

the strangest thing was with my eBay account --- nothing was purchased, nothing was saved/watched, nothing was sold --- but --- my "recently viewed" history showed all kinds of fantasy figures and crap like that, the sort of stuff a teenager might be buying. after I feel safe that my e-mail is OK I'll have to change my eBay password again and get in some sort of routine where I change stuff.

I sure don't want to go through this again and wouldn't wish the past five days on anyone. B)

I have noticed a sharp increase in the number of "problem" emails in the past several months. One even included one of my passwords (fortunately one that had been changed and was no longer used). I have now reached the point of instantly deleting any email that looks in any way suspicious. There is probably a lot more info on the dark web than any of us would like to know.

Just today I received a letter from a former brokerage firm informing me that a possible breach had taken place due to lax security at a third party firm when they send old information out to be digitally destroyed. I hadn't used that brokerage firm in about nine years!

    All glory is fleeting.
