Machine Doubling, a premium?

joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 16,239 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was watching YouTube last night. They showed the 1969s, as well as, the 2013 Shield Cent with the dreaded M.D. He explained both were sold for over $15! Wow, could this be the new hot coin? If so, I got a ton! $$$ Lol

Who know's? There could be a day when were searching through rolls than someone finds a coin that's questionable. Than he finds out by a member and he tells him," no good! It's just a DD." Lol

I’ve only heard of a premium for a dramatic machine doubling. And that makes sense to me. What we usually see for MD wouldn’t deserve a premium as it’s so common.

How many got sucked into a poorman's 55 double die in the late 60's?

I never bought/paid for any of the '55 P.M. DD's in the sixties,
but I sure did find a lot of 'em........

This is why people should avoid YouTube unless they know the source is credible (The mint, Coin Week, etc). New collectors hear this info, and think they struck it rich.

BTW: I bought a poorman's DD when I was a kid in in the 70's. While I knew it wasn't the biggie, I had no idea what that it was due to die deterioration (or even what die deterioration was). It's probably still in a box somewhere

    This is the key question.

Just because uneducated people pay for worthless coins does not make them valuable. Or does it... :/

Only if you are the seller, oh, and their check clears! 😉

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

The guy on YouTube wasn't the buyer. He just said he noticed it on Ebay.

Just because you can find a turd shaped like Jesus Christ that sold on eBay for $500 doesn't mean turds are actually worth $500.

Someone who didn't know any better got taken advantage of by someone who either did or didn't know better.
