Why would someone bother to counterfeit that?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Can you share your reason for placing it in a holder? Educational tool? Cheers, RickO

I purchased this coin about 30 years ago for $800 raw as a Gem BU. Only about 10000 were minted and after receiving this as a counterfiet I was the high bidder for a MS65 PCGS for $2000+.

It's a nice coin. I can't take nice photos with my cellphone. When I compared it with the MS65 that I recently aquired you can really see the difference. The lettering on the genuine is sharper than the counterfeit.

Send it to ICG to get the yellow counterfeit insert.

If you bought it 30 yrs ago it is not a typical Chinese counterfeit.

A good educational piece. I would do as @Zoins suggests.

Is this a serious question? :D
It's a very expensive coin and a key date.

I know next to nothing about commems and will freely admit it. :/

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Sure you can. It happens all the time. Some documented fakes are worth much more than the originals (such as that $1000 Henning nickel that sold on eBay last month).

Agree. You can sell it as long as you don't misrepresent it as being a genuine coin.

So, what else did you buy 30 years ago from that particular person? Could there be other pigs in the poke? Peace Roy

I find this thread fascinating! So what would happen if you sent the coin to NGC?

They would also body bag it for being a fake. What did you think would happen?

Are you joking? NGC is very good at detecting counterfeits.

i hope if you go to some shows/shops you take this with you. i've been at shows/shops when people have brought various forgeries and shared them whether the item(s) be in a person's pocket or their case.

i've also carried many with me to show n tell.

there may or may have not been a few times when walking into a shop, besides hello, the first words out of my mouth are, "hey, got any new counterfeits this week/month to share/sell !":naughty:

i've seen people try and every blue moon, succeed. not necessarily for nefarious/devious purposes.

but like you said odds are not good. i can't even fathom the amount of time and money spent on counterfeit detection training at the top 5 tpg.
