Not sure why this would be surprising, but perhaps that is because in the coin collecting world we have been exposed to the fake coins for a long time now....Cheers, RickO
I've said before that 90% of the gold bars sold on Ebay are fakes. Huge market.
I remember that there was a restaurateur here in Las Vegas that bought gold bars off ebay and from coin shops to put away as his retirement. The day came and he retired. Thought he was wealthy until he tried selling some of his gold. Took several of the small bars out of his safe and to a reputable coin shop and tried to sell. They of course used an XRF machine and tested before buying. They were all gold plated copper. Turns out that out of the $3 in gold he had stashed almost all of it was fake. These bars were the cute little one ounce bars in bubble plastic that you see all over ebay.
Lesson: Buy only from a reputable local source that will test the gold you buy in front of your eyes.
