Looking to expand my overdate collection.
I have a short list of must haves and dream coins but there always seem to be more cool ones that I've overlooked.
Hook me up with some fresh inspiration 😊
Not mine, but here's one that blows me away...

Let's not forget about the old 1888/7 Indian Cent. I've had a bounty on her head ever since I started collecting!

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Technically the cool 1864 Indian Cent die variety above is a Repunched Date (RPD).
To be an Overdate, it needs to be a combination of two different dates.
Oh? You're right. My bad
You learn something new everyday. Thanks

Overdates
Definition: An overdate is a modification made to a working hub that involves two different numerals being punched or engraved into the same spot. One or more digits may be affected. Overdates sometimes represent an attempt to correct a mistake when the wrong punch was initially used to punch in a digit. At other times it represents an expedient measure. Dies left over from the previous year may simply have one or several digits repunched so that the die can be used in the current year. The relevant area of the die face is often abraded so that the prominence of the original date is reduced.
Overdates are closely related to re-punched dates. However, a re-punched date doesn’t involve the superimposition of one digit over a different digit. Repunched dates simply involve the repunching of the same digit or digits

My fave Overdate is to the left.
That was easy.

@Zoins Why would you crap on a great idea for a thread?
A true rarity in all grades.
In terms of dramatic overdate, a nice 1805/4 o103 half and 1806/5 quarter would go nicely with the cent you posted.
All in the same era when the mint didn’t seem to try to efface the underdigit at all
I sold this 1817/3 some years ago but it's my favorite overdate:
Absolutely!
Add the 1802/1 wide date Bust$ and you have my short list in all its glory...😃
Yes indeed..the very date that started my obsession. 🤪
I think he was just interjecting a little humor and had no intention of craping on this thread.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
Is the 1943/2 nickel the last US overdate? I can't think of any later date overdates.

I have many favorite overdates, but here are a few from the series I collect.

1824 Over Various Dates (4 Over 2/0/?)
I quite like overdates in my series (8 Reales) because it gives you an insight into mint processes and practices of the time. There are major ones that resulted from dies left over from previous year having to be recut for the new one. If that happens to fall on a decade switch, you get 2-digit overdates like 10 over 09, 20 over 19, etc... if It falls on a century, it might mean a 3-digit one like the 1800/1799. Or it could be the opposite, where a die was prepared for next year's run but an unforseen die damage required reworking the digit backwards, like we see in a Guadalajara 8 Reales with an 1821/22 overdate.
And then there are silly mistakes, like this one. Die sinker messed up the order of the digits in the date, which if you think about the die being a mirror of the coin would make sense, and created a Zacatecas 8 Reales with an 1819/9181 date below

Too notch Dave...👆
As for repunched dates, I've always wanted one of these..
Very cool JayPem!
The frosty 7 under the 8 is very noticeable.
I have not seen that one 2K!
Super cool and exactly the reason I started the thread..wanting to find out about the unusual and odd off the radar stuff.
I consider portrait 8's my "other" series of major interest and still don't know much at all about the overdates. Of which there are many dramatic ones...
I'd love to see more here!
They are legit US colonial coinage after all 😉
Cheating a little and posting a foreign coin, this is a close up of a 1947/5 Colombia 20 Centavos. There are many overdates from 1946 through 1951 on Colombian coinage, all of them over 1945. Coins that show the underlying 5 this well are more sought after than those that show only a trace.

I like the Merc 42/1 and the 1853/4 Seated Liberty quarter. I no longer own the Seated Lib overdate but I had one for many years.
No intention of damaging the thread and I hope most people have a sense of humor.
That's actually a famous overdate with a collector following. Do you know what it is?
Sweet, a thread where everyone can post their 1936-S/192x Mercury Dimes!

the 1817/4 bust half
I once PM'd a guy who owned one 😅
I wouldn't mind knowing what it is..?
Heck yeah!!
For me personally, if it's smaller than a large cent or bust quarter I'm probably not gonna get one.
Unless it's a love token or Hobo nickel!
Ideally I would be able to find the overdates I'm looking for on pieces that have been counterstamped, engraved or carved.
Tall order for sure, but given enough time they may start turning up..😊
This one-
Latin American Collection
Okie Dokie...here is the Top Pop that I used to own. Posting this as an overdate usually unleashes a firestorm of activity. The Cherrypickers' Guide lists it as a "Possible OverDate" and it does look like there is a 2 underneath the 3 but no one has ever been able to match this up to any 1920s dated Merc. I am currently looking for a better example than this one(preferably higher grade and without a carbon spot in the middle of the forehead), just in case anyone sees one.

1777/8 ??
That is one of cool ones for sure..any known Hobo's on that overdate?
1779/7. Single finest graded Charles III 4R to boot.

I wonder if this counts as an overdate or a repunched date - Liberty Head $10, 1865-S $10 865 over inverted 186
I sold mine long ago, here's the close-up from Coinfacts

No idea about the coin you posted. Just felt forum members could bring great examples to this thread and they have.
Indeed there is-
Cool thread - a couple more busties....

I sold this one a number of years ago!
Although I no longer have her, this 1853/4 25C is my favorite overdate that I bought unattributed a couple years back.

This does indeed appear to be an overdate.
It's true that sometimes the under digit shapes are not entirely clear,
and it becomes difficult to classify a variety as an overdate or an RPD.

The one that got me started when I was an elementary school youngster was the 1827/6 bust half
BHNC #248 … 108 and counting.
How cool was that. Wtg and am glad they responded to you
I know that the Denver version of the 1942/1 Merc is much more subtle than the Philly minted ones.
I'm hoping this one I found might be both an overdate and a case of die doubling. If it is, It sure would be just reward for the case of eye strain I got finding it!
Any dime experts care to weigh in? Thanks.
Just machine/mechanical doubling. It is not an overdate or DDO. Unless very high mint state which it seems that one is not, genertally does not add any additional value. Always fun to see, just not a big premium for that one.
