Very cool, lets see some 9 and 10 potentials!

So of course I go right for the Brett, Eck and Nolan first and all 3 are way OC. So I’m disappointed. I then start going through the rest and had a long run of all OC cards. But it improved a ton between cards about 150-300. Started hitting a LOT of nice cards. Here are some pics.

I agree Brad, those two and the Jim Rice seem to be the top hits. Tons of commons look good too. The Steve Ontiveros looks really nice and it is a pop 1 card.

Is there a story to this set? Assembled by you in 1976? Recently acquired? etc....

  • Options
    76collector76collector Posts: 986 ✭✭✭✭✭

nam812 I won a PWCC auction last week. It was highly advertised as put together by an old timer from a few vending boxes in 1976 and wrapped in brown kraft paper never opened or touched since 1976. So far it has been true to form. Cards have absolutely perfect gloss and 95% sharp corners. The first 150 cards or so were ALL OC. But card 150-400ish have been much better centering wise. I took a risk buying something that you couldn't see, but it has been a blast going through it so far.

All done going through them. Unfortunately the Brett, Eck, Nolan and Hank Aaron are not centered well enough to grade. But I have a stack of 120 that warrant looking more closely at as far as grading. These 6 are the best of the hall of famers but the other 120 are all in the same condition.

I overpaid. That's the most a 76 set has gone for in a while, but the intrigue of opening it caught me. I'm not disappointed, as the cards were as advertised, but I'm still up in the air as to whether it was worth it or not. All depends on what the grades come back as, I guess. But regardless it was fun, and it is a really nice 76 set.

Not sure how long you have been collecting.

Cards that had borders showing on all four sides with sharp corners were considered mint back in the 1970's, and 1980's for that matter. Very few cared how cards were centered.

Looks to me like you got into a "war" with two other bidders. One of whom kept bumping up the price.

I think you did very well with the centering. Too bad the key cards were off center.

If you get lucky enough to get 9's on the 6 HOFers, (according to ebay sold items) you are looking at around $750.00 in cards.

    If the Joe Morgan gets a 10, it's a $300-400.00 card. A 1978 Jim Rice PSA 10 sold for $700.00

Have you checked the population report for low pop commons? I tried and couldn't find "baseball cards" from 1976?!?!?!?!?

You could be sitting on a gold mine!

@JoeBanzai , I have been collecting a long time. Been a forum member for a while, but dropped off the last couple years as financially I couldn't afford to do much. I once had a 76 set that I collected over years and many rack packs/sets/raw card buys that was top 10 on the registry set. So, I have some experience. Bought packs off Grote, CPAmike and others, and sold that set to a member here who's id is 1954. I think it had 50-100 PSA graded cards and quite a few 10's in it. Anyway, all that to say its a stretch to pay anything more than 1K for a 1976 set. And to pay 2K for one that you can't see a single card is a little crazy. But I know prices are going up at the moment as interest is hot right now, and I'm doing pretty well right now financially, and want to rebuild some of the stuff I sold off. So, why not start with a bang, and get "thrill of the chase" as well as maybe get some nice cards. I'm thinking there are definitely some 10's in here, and lots of 9's. Some are low population too. I will post some more pics if people are interested in seeing commons.

None of my regrets are the cards I bought - all are the ones I let get away!! If you didn’t win this the likelihood you ever saw what was inside is low. You would have always wondered :) Peace of mind, the thrill of opening it and the chance of that perfect Brett are worth something - even if we feel like we overpay sometimes.

Well done sir, very nice pick up. Most sets advertised as nm-mt don't reallt mean anything if you are considering grading. I think you did well and you surely have some 10's there. I have finished several 76 sets and none of them come quite as close as I would like. You scored big. Good luck and keep us posted should you decide to submit.

@brad31 couldnt agree more. Had I missed on this I always would’ve wondered if a perfectly centered Brett was in it. So no regrets. @miller777 definitely agree on the nm/mt comment. Doesn’t mean much when the seller shows pics of a bunch of majorly OC cards. For those of you who are only interested in stars feel free to move on. @jackstraw the ted Simmons is not bad. Just not gradable.

@Maxwell22 - I will get them out and post pics. But they are terribly OC. Even as the best cards in the set they are still not worth sending to PSA. They are possibly the worst cards centering wise in the entire set.

    Here is the Simmons.

@thekid8 its not centered but otherwise crisp and beautiful color. I’d guess the centering May keep it out of an 8 tho. So my unprofessional opinion is it would grade a 7.

Those are sharp @rexvos !!! Unless there is bottom right corner wear, that Palmer looks like a 10 for days !!!! The jackson as well with the bottom left corner. Good luck bro, I hope you get a 10 out of one of those. The Brett is nice too. Are you keeping fingers crossed for an 8 on it, or do you think the centering isn't quite there ?

    1976 Topps Keith Hernandez #542
    1976 Topps Hank Aaron #550
    1976 Topps Dwight Evans #575 Qty. 2
1976 Topps Rookie Infienders (Willie Randolph) #599
1976 Topps Rookie Pitchers (Ron Guidry) #599 Qty.2
    1976 Topps Tom Seaver #600

I have another Modern sub that will include 1 Thurman Munson and and the Honus Wagner ATA

These cards were all blazers in my opinon, but my opinion does not mean much to PSA lately. I had a sub pop Monday that really hurt. I will post a few cards from it (no 76s) but from the same purchase I made. I did hit a nice 9 (which I thought at the time I sent could have easily be a 10) of a Bruce Sutter RC.

I will not post all the cards from that sub just a few that I am not cracking and trying again. I may review the Sutter as well as an 1984 Fleer Update Clemens that came back a 9 as well. I have to look at them first. All that to be said, PSA has really tightened the grip of late, or I just keep getting graders that are having a rough week.

Good luck on your sub @rexvos. I’m not sure how to rate myself in sub strength. I usually have a pretty good eye and I’m picky about what I sub, but I ALWAYS seem to mix in a total dud. Last few subs I’ve hit multiple gem mint 10’s a few 9’s but will mix in the nicest 5 you will ever see, lol. Here is my Carlton. I would definitely submit it, if it weren’t for the touched top right corner. Otherwise it’s a beauty.

@ArtVandelay , yeah actually that is what I saw that made me put it in the stack not to submit. A little damage to that bottom left edge. Nice looking card but not gradable. Here are some of the other star cards. I wish they were centered but if they were all centered perfect I guess there wouldn’t be much of a chase !
