Encased coins, what ya got?

COINS MAKE CENTSCOINS MAKE CENTS Posts: 1,788 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just found these in the office. I forgot I had bought them a few years ago and put them in a "safe" spot to list on the website later. It was "safe" alright that was a year ago.

Thought it would be interesting to see what encased coins others have here.

Wow, an encased 1914-D! I have a encased 1922-D cent and I know @dcarr has posted an encased 1911-S cent in the past.

    Your chamber pot looks familiar!

Just curious do you have the strap with it? Supposibly they were given out with the leather strap, which is the only reason I kept it attached to mine

    Here's my encased one!

I've looked to have it graded but I don't know how! πŸ˜‚

I wonder how they grade encased cents, does it go by the wear on the coin or encased part? Wouldn't the two metals wear different?

I have about 125 irradiated dimes - different types, holder styles, dates, etc.
I started a thread on these a couple of years ago - much more information there and more photos.

Here are a few from my collection. Not the best photos though, as they were taken years ago.

Love that irradiated dime thread! B)
Hard to believe that thread is two years old. Here are some scarcer pieces I posted to it:

As I mentioned before, this is the only merchant that I am aware of that had 1914D Lincolns as the encased coin. I know of another example and possibly one more (it might be the same piece). I've handled a whole lot of 1909 Indian & Lincoln encased 1c and have not run across a S or Svdb as yet (although I would bet that they were made) -- at least not in an encasement.

The worn wording reads "Wants Your Business / Capital $50,000.00". If the customer did not request a specific date (for an opening, an anniversary, etc.) the die sinker used whatever he had on hand (usually the current or previous year). Minimum order was usually only 50 or 100 depending on the maker so there might be a couple more that haven't been popped out or lost. Although it isn't signed with the die sinker's name I would venture that it was made in the Midwest where D mint cents were more commonly available.
