Over the past year I've started acquiring different types of imitation slug "gold". I have a small collection, hooked on these. This is my favorite design so far. I believe it's cataloged as Miner Kneeling- Jankovsky-130. Bronze. I've seen these dated by TPG's from the 1920s to 1930s.

    These are fascinating medals.

I have a few of the California Gold Discovery slug medals.

The California Gold Rush was a major event in the state's history and early in the 20th century San Francisco's Irvine & Jachens medal company and other companies began striking medals to commemorate it.

A favorite medal design was based on the octagonal $50 gold coin or "slug" issued by Augustus Humbert's San Francisco Assay Office in the 1850's.

One of these medals appeared as a "gold coin" in the 1966 television show "Gunsmoke" episode "The Treasure of John Walking Fox" which starred Leonard Nimoy as an American Indian.

    Yes, they are very cool!

WILLIEBOYD2, I see you have the other type of my medal!

I don't have the miner standing one yet but it's on my acquisition list. B)

Looks like the original surfaces do not hold up well on many of these pieces. An unblemished collection of them would be quite the undertaking!

  • I have one from the 1850's. Just arrived in the mail.

Would like additional information about it if anybody has information.
