1856-1864 Copper-Nickel Cents

In this just released article, we take a deep look at the nine year span of copper-nickel cents. In 1856, Director of the United States Mint James Ross Snowden, opted for a new one-cent coin alloy composed of 88% copper, 12% nickel. 1864 saw the bronze composition chosen that consists of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc.
