    Nasty environmental damage

I cannot take a photo or video if my life depended on it, but whomever took these pictures is either trying to hide something, or is really really bad.

That was taken with a scanner and it didn't focus correctly (obviously) on the coin. It did, however, scan the NGC hologram very nicely.

I’ll give NGC the benefit of the doubt that it isn’t ED but man it is dark

Maybe original surfaces and no damage, but less than average eye appeal. Hope I’m wrong. Look forward to seeing your pics.

Its a gamble, for sure. I like NGC cert scans better, but there are a few spots that could be problematic. Fun and inexpensive way to keep entertained while waiting for some great coins to surface.

Maybe not beautiful but something tells me it will look much better in hand. Good luck

I voted in between because there is just no way to know without seeing it in hand IMHO, even from NGC pictures!

I'll bet it's decent in hand.

    Beautiful natural color

I am uncomfortable with the term "damage." The coin may have been exposed to unusual factors affecting its tarnishing. May not be beautiful, but certainly not damaged.

I saw it but decided not to risk it. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out. :)

The seller wouldn't ship to Canada, so it's taking a detour at my brother's in Pittsburgh.

A little too dark for me but I can see some colors there. I hope it's better in hand. Peace Roy

While waiting for the coin in the OP to make its way to Canada via USPS Registered, picked up this 1801 8 Reales in NGC 63 and already received it (go FedEx!). It was another auction with less than stellar photos, but i am very happy with the coin in-hand. Lots of luster, color popping on the reverse, no pesky hairlines... and an unattributed FT/M over-assayer, to boot.

There were a number of dies reworked for 1801 when Mariano Rodriguez was replaced by Tomas Butron Miranda. Some have pretty drastic O/A characteristics. On this die the characteristic is very small. Have to know to look for it.

Here's an 1801 with probably the most clear O/A I've seen. Notice the corrected period after the T, as well:

I would have never guessed that was an OA mark. The other example.it is clear. Thanks.

I don't believe that I would have problem bidding on it, it seems to me it is with the risk. A little bit of excitement doesn't hurt these dreary days.
