if they don't/can't follow the color progression of a rainbow, should they then at least "mimic" something close to a rainbow arc to qualify for that term??
Are the 1698 William III Half Crown and the 1891 Victorian Florin "true rainbows" within the modern sense or as anticipated by the majority here? That answer is no... But the vibrant colors that are not completely captured are rarely seen on either denomination. These two examples are among the finest known. The 1891 florin is the finest graded by our host.
If the images of both of these were not shared, perhaps the universe of color and what exists would never be seen by collectors that may ponder the question... What exists besides mostly US 20th century and some Morgan Dollars that displays bold color?
As for the 8R, I should have used better judgment as color can be difficult to capture...

As an aside, I had a dealer review a potential purchase over the phone today. The coin description on the website said "rainbow toning." One of the first things out of his mouth was something like "The coin is nicely colored, but I don't know why our website says rainbow toning......."

The article has a lot of light refraction/ thin film interference references as in toned coins. Thanks for ruining tomorrows lunch!
I miss that coin, I regret selling it, but am glad a knowledgable forum member owns it!

If you are looking for bands of color, here is one.
Hope everyone realizes that technically speaking, coins don't truly rainbow tone. They do , however, oil spill tone.
That 1926 is just absurdly nice.
It certainly is!
I’ve got a couple I would consider rainbow or multiple color coins

I would not consider this rainbow. Without splitting hairs there’s only two colors: blue and orange.
Closer but still no.
Not even close to being close.
Still working on trying to get better photos of this one.
Hope everyone realizes that technically speaking, coins don't truly rainbow tone.

I know mine doesn't compare to your coins guy's but here's what I picked up today. Near the rims, maybe a tad?

Not exactly rainbow toning, but these are a couple of toners I have:

Apparently, not many, despite thoughts or wishes to the contrary.😈
