Hi all,

My most recent purchase had an interesting looking coin in the lot. Is this a strike through or grease filled die? Part of the area looks lower than the surface on the coin yet the very bottom tip and top of the 9 are still visible.

Thanks.

Since it straight graded it Is presumably a struck thru and not damage. I guess the submitter didn't want to pay extra for the error tier.

In general, reverse pics are a good idea to show that there us not corresponding damage opposite the void. But since it is stabbed it is not an issue.

    Looks great.

    Could be grease on date.

Real nice coin! I think I would lean toward grease filled die.

    It's a filled die error.

Looking at the magnified image, I would say it is a struck through....the indent goes well beyond the digit, plus the bottom of the nine is clear....Cheers, RickO

That is actually a very rare coin of Commodus struck in AD 187! ;)
