I don't really collect mint errors myself, but these are far too cool not to share.

How do coins that big with that much missing make it out of the mint??

Three bites out of the 1978 - that is cool. Two bites are uncommon, but three bites is super scarce.
Not sure, most likely an inside job. This collection is part of a mint error and rare coin lot from a bank worker. So they had access to millions of these and cherry picked away. Also bought 3 bags worth of Morgan and Peace Dollars from them.
Those are normal (but much larger than average) Ike Clipped Planchets.
They escaped in Mint Sewn Bags - there was no 'inside job' for
these clips.
About 20-25 years ago I bought over 250 pcs. of Clipped Ikes
from a worker in the 'cage' that pulled them out of bags over
the years........
Most of the 1974-D and1977-D 40% silver Ikes were found in
Vegas casinos - I know, 'cause I bought 'em all as they surfaced
back in the late '70's.
Now those are CLIPS!!....
Evidently, according to Fred, they are not uncommon... but I had not seen large clips like that before. Cheers, RickO
Those are real nice!!
Those are great, unquestionably genuine clips, thanks for sharing.
