1837 Feuchtwanger Cent For Your Thoughts

ksammutksammut Posts: 1,076 ✭✭✭

The quarantine has finally been lifted here in my part of Pennsylvania, so I took this past weekend to visit my local coin shops, with mask and all! One of the dealers had this Feuchtwanger Cent and it was reasonably priced, so I purchased it. It has a very nice design with quite a bit of detail left. What are your thoughts on the grade of this coin? I say around the VF range, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Nice! @ambro51 used to collect these fairly heavily and even gave a nice presentation at the Atlantic County Numismatic Society, ca. 2010.

Very nice VF. Some of the varieties add value to it. I don't follow them but look online to see which one you have

My thought was around VF 25.

A nice vf -- from memory it looks like a 4-E variety which I believe is a Koutsoures Rarity-3 on a R-1 to R-8 scale. Jim Koutsoures put together a 12 or 14 pages pamphlet back around 1990 which was the best printed identification chart out there for many years.

Thank you everyone! It's a good thing my grading wasn't far off. When I saw it in the dealer's case, my eye was instantly attracted to it. I love how original it appears.

@tokenpro - Comparing it to an online resource, I thought it was a 4-E as well. Thanks for confirming.

I would say VF Obverse, Fine Reverse. Nice piece.

    Nice Feuchtwanger cent!

Many years ago, I owned several of these in grades from Good to AU. Eventually sold all of them. Wish I had kept the AU one.

    Me too !
Although I probably don't regret selling them. Sometimes it just has to be someone else's turn.

This is the second thread on Feuchtwanger cents today.... As I said in the other thread, I do not have one.. but looking at these - and knowing the history - I may be deciding to add one.... ;) Yep, I do like the design. Cheers, RickO

Nice. I agree with the VF designation, though technically, I think it has a vf+ obverse and a F+ reverse. It is variety 4-E (R-3) so a slightly better variety. You can tell because the serpent's tail loop is left of the date on the obverse and the C and P in Composition are re-cut.
