PL or not PL....that is the question.

OneyOney Posts: 1,394 ✭✭✭✭

I have posted a few of my recent purchases and in several of the threads the question was asked if the coin had the PL designation. Most do not. Looking for comments and opinions about the designation. I really enjoy collecting coins that have the eye appeal of PL or semi PL. Whether a coin has the designation, to me it is about the eye appeal that can drive my purchase. Do not get me wrong, I have many coins that are not even semi PL that I think the eye appeal is special. What is you experience? I have posted 3 recent purchases that do not have the designation and 1 that does to get us started...…..

3 Non-PL Coins
81-S MS67+ CAC

85-CC MS66

92-CC MS65

and 1 PL coin
79-CC MS63PL

Beautiful Morgans...and three CC's...You have excellent coins there...I would think some of the 'non' pl's would deserve a second look...Cheers, RickO

Great coins. Out of the non-PL coins you posted the 81-S definitely looks closest to PL but the others are certainly strong candidates. Something I noticed about early CC Morgans is that PL examples tend to have a more frosted/hazy appearance than an 81-S for instance. Not sure if this a coincidence or has something to do with the minting process. I bought this 78-CC at local shop last year and I am anxiously awaiting the results from PCGS. Hoping for a 63-64PL. I will let you know when the grade comes in.

To me, none of the non-PL's look like they deserve the PL designation. However, it's usually quite difficult to tell if a coin is PL or DPL, based just on pictures/without seeing it in hand and tilting and rotating it under a light.

Just a clarification, I was not looking for an evaluation of my coins but rather how do others think it should be handled today. What experiences have others had about coins they thought we PL but did not receive the designation? What about eye appeal? Do they like the look of semi PL and are willing to pay more for it even though it is not designated as PL?

Your images seem to be good enough to make the call. None of the top 3 coins should get a PL--just look at the evident cartwheel luster. Now look at coin 4. There is a difference. Of course, this comment presumes that the images convey the whole story, and they almost never do.

PL coins are not as attractive as non PL in my opinion. I love the cartwheel effect on non PL coins. Silver dollars used to be called "cartwheels" back in the day.

I don't think PL coins always photograph well.

If you prefer non-PL coins then consider it a gift. There are more than enough people chasing PL coins and keeping the price high.

They measure the depth of mirrors to determine PL/DMPL possibilities, no? So a coin is flagged to be checked during grading, or something, and then is confirmed by a finalizer for depth of mirrors prior to the designation being assigned? It is very tough to tell from pictures if a coin will be PL/DMPL or not.

Good eye! All those (besides the '79CC) sure look to appear as PL's. Esp. the '81 San Francisco. Oh well, I guess you got to hope you have a grader/s on a good day? Lol. Regardless, gorgeous coins, dude! <3

I would see if you have at least 2 inches of reflectivity on them look very close from the pictures IMHO.
