Has anyone seen this fake 1934 Washington quarter?

jedmjedm Posts: 2,943 ✭✭✭✭✭

I found this one today going through a group of silver that my brother in law's father had collected. It was an interesting collection that looked to be taken from circulation. In amongst a Barber, a dozen or so standing liberties, and a couple dozen silver Washingtons this one showed up:
It has a dull gray look and just didn't look right.
After weighing in at only 4.57 grams and looking at it closely it appears to NOT be of US mint origin.
Any ideas about this one?
Any light that can be shed on this one is greatly appreciated.

@coinJP Not lead because it's lighter than the 6.25 grams it should be. But yes it looks like lead.

Looks like a contemporary counterfeit that was just passed along in day to day transactions.

Definitely a fake quarter... The light weight is curious, and the pictures make it appear to have been cast...so could be what we used to call 'pot metal'...a mixture of scrap metals melted for casting. Cheers, RickO

I think you hit it on the head @ricko > pot metal is just what my dad would've called it too. It has that dull gray look to it. I wonder who made it and when. Thanks for all the input guys!

I just ran across one of these as well. It has the same date 1934, but it is a little heavier than the one in the OP 5.34g. It does not have any reeding, and the failed the Sigma test so it is not 90% silver.

You can get the Sigma to call a copper round .999 silver. So it is a tool, but not the end all.

I remember that at least one full roll of high-quality uncirculated 1934 silver quarters turned up at coin shows in the 1990s. These coins were deemed to be counterfeit. I have not heard any more about them since then. The two shown in this thread are not the ones I am referring to.
