Thought there may be some interest here in the old pricing of coins. The Trading Post section of the paper really drives home how the hobby has changed when it comes to completing your collect.
"Trade EF 1861 silver three-cent piece and one EF 1832 half-dime (with small pit mark on right obverse) for your strictly good 1922 Plain Lincoln."
I wonder how many of the ads were answered.

I would look at the 81 QE. Edit and several others. Hindsight was unfortunately not available.
WoW! Very cool! I like the price on the 1893s Morgan back then. In a F it's only $47! Lol. Today, In a G4 it's over $2200. Lol

55 years from now current prices may look just as "cheap".
About that time my Dad bought me an 1878-CC Morgan in Unc. for $4.25.
Just think, if you had even a slight deep pocket, one can buy every Morgan and have one heck of a set! And I'm talking in a high grade.

The "Trading Post" section was avidly searched by many collectors (including myself) during the period that paper represents. In the case of NUMISMATIC NEWS, much of the paper, especially in its early years, was devoted to "free" ads from subscribers. Overgrading was just as big of a problem then as today where raw coins are involved. Toned coins were not considered to be true "Uncs" by many collectors, especially in the case of copper coins.
I remember the CW Trading Post section. That brings back many memories. Those were my first ads I had placed. All transactions were successful.
Remember when the "Wanted to Buy" section was 7 or 8 pages ?
I would be making up packages constantly.
I don't even think that section is a full page today.......
A 1889 cc Morgan in unc. $300.00. I'd love to go back in time
In November of '63 I had left the Navy, had two young daughters (one a newborn, the other a year and a half), working hard in the Navy Yard and no extra funds for coins...pocket change was my coin show/shop. Actually, at that time, I did not know about coin shows....Cheers, RickO

Like the prices on the gold coins. Would have been great time to invest.
Just over a year earlier, the 98-O Morgan was 100x that.

Those were the days of the wild west and buyer beware... lots of cleaned XFs being sold as uncs and worse...showing up now as grandad's prized BU sets of Morgans. I remember buying a BU seated quarter from a CW ad and getting a pitted scrubbed coin..... lots of these dealers just hoped the stuff they mailed out would not be returned.
