eBay finally got me....

After getting annoyed with eBay in the early 2000 time frame, I gave it up. Cold turkey. No more eBay for THIS boy!!
But, within the last couple of years, I have bought as "a guest" when I stumbled onto something on collectors.com.
Tonight, I saw a coin a "had to have".....but eBay wouldn't let me buy as a guest!! Not sure if that is a sellers option, or if eBay remembers me and saw an opportunity to snag me, or if this is a new policy, or what.
But, I signed up. I'm an eBay'er again.
(Feel like I"m making a 12-step program confession).

I think considerably less of you now.
Ebay was good for coins and bullion, until they started charging forced sales tax. Unless i can get a really good deal, i buy elsewhere these days
Nice

So you're OK with skirting the law??? When you go to Wal Mart or Target how do you handle sales tax???? Do you tell them to take a hike???
If you live in a state where sales tax is due on coins and you are not charged it, you are obligated to pay a use tax.

While I agree, for some types, dates, grades, etc....you pretty much have to buy 'em where you see 'em.
I've had my eyes open for a reasonably original looking "1806 Draped Bust Half, pointed 6, no stem, F-12 to F-15", for quite awhile. Not RARE....but they don't come along as often as MS-64 Morgans, and don't appear at every Mom and Pop store....
Welcome to the 13th step.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
You are not the same "TommyType" we all knew...
I don't know if we can get over your revelation any time soon.....
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I like it for coins, I mostly like it for non-coin items you really just cannot find anywhere else.
Lucky for me my state has no sales tax on coins or bullion. The extra 7% would be a real killer.
Welcome back to the bay.
Ebay has it's problems and I've been caught up in most of them, but it's still the best world wide market.
Wisdom has been chasing you but, you've always been faster
I do not buy coins on ebay any more...too many scams, too much hype....I have purchased some non-coin items and have done well once out of the 'collectors' areas...Good for spare parts or a special tool...Cheers, RickO
My local B&Ms and the BS&T forum are great!
Brave souls buying numismatic stuff on feeBay. I occasionally buy some model railroad stuff, but then the package comes with contact info and from then on you deal outside of feeBay from thence on.
As for tax, online auctions across the board are taxing sales. My latest Heritage purchase got hit with my state's tax.
I do an occasional book now and then that's about it
Ebay has been excellent for finding choice fractional currency.
I find some nice stuff on there. I’m a buyer only, though.

If eBay were a single guy he'd be the one running the bumper boats at a busted down amusement park.
Just think of all the amazing coins you missed on eBay during that time period.
During that exact same time period, I built a coin business almost exclusively on eBay from 40K in debt to 400K in inventory and zero debt.
Welcome back
It's not ebay's choice whether or not to charge sales tax. It is your state and new laws that require online vendors to charge sales tax to the states they sell to, not for the state in which they reside.

My final thought on the matter:
I think that, depending on how you use it, eBay can be a totally different monster than it was in the early days. Those were the days of the "wild west". Unscrupulous sellers, hack dealers, and "screw the buyer". Now, there are plenty of reputable REAL dealers on the Bay, and a good amount of protection.
Not sure I'll get to the point of doing eBay only searching. But on Collectors.com, there are plenty of good listings that can only be purchased through eBay. I can hang with that....
Not only did you fall off the wagon, you drug it into the forest, set fire to it, and used the insurance money to buy coins.......
