You might want to remove the bezel from the coin because the signs of a weak D will be on the edge. Wire rim on the obverse and scalloped edge on the reverse.

  • Thank you - we are not trying to sell it, but may take it out to check if it's worth it. If there is a weak D, can the coin still grade high? I noticed there were none registered above a grade of around a 40 on pcgs. Curious if this one could grade higher than that and if so what total estimated value would you give? I assume it would be pretty rare I imagine

The coin will looks to be mid to low AU. With coins in bezels there is always a possibility of the coin being damaged and cleaned for jewelry which will lower its value.

At PCGS there have been weak D’s graded up to a 58.

  • I do not think it was cleaned. I guess it could be a strong D if pulled out of the bezel? Most likely its a weak D I think a strong D would show through the bezel......if truly not cleaned , do you think this coin could be a low MS?

That coin has been in a bezel and probably will not straight grade.

  • It might grade MS-details?

No chance, it has wear to the feathers and definitely looks cleaned on the reverse

I see no evidence of a weak D, but it's hard to tell with those pictures, honestly. Some coins pulled from bezels can still straight grade, but again, with those pictures, we just can't tell. Take it out of the bezel (without damaging it or cleaning it), and shoot some new, clearer pictures if you can.

Very hard to tell with pics. It does look cleaned though

Being in a bezel, it likely will not straight grade (though it is possible). I do see 'something' in your picture - but it may just be pareidolia .... We need a well defined image to help further... or just send it for authentication...Cheers, RickO

Pareidolia is a type of apophenia, which is a more generalized term for seeing patterns in random data. Some common examples are seeing a likeness of Jesus in the clouds or an image of a man on the surface of the moon.
