Guy had a coin listed at $47.24 with Make an offer option. I offer $35.50 he declines and counteroffers with
$47.24

Perhaps he thought a 25% reduction from his ask price was too far apart to close a deal, so he is essentially deciding to simply not work with you. Alternatively, perhaps he just botched the reply process and meant to send a different number and engage you in a more meaningful manner.

I wasn't really expecting to get the coin for $35 but I was expecting to get a counter offer less than the listed price.

I've had this happen to me a couple of times. I always just chuckle and move on. Some folks are funny.

I had counteroffers of a few dollars off the buy it now price. why even bother having a best offer option if it's less then one percent off the buy it now price?

The seller considered your offer to be insulting. Just move on. There is NO reason to overpay for anything collectible in these days of COVID19. The world has changed and it will not be kind to collectibles.

Yes. I countered with $42.12 and it was accepted.

I've had offers of half the asking price accepted, so it's not out of the question to offer 75%...

If you want to guess the grade, feel free to do so.

If it were mine I would say it's XF40 because of how dirty it looks. I think it's technically probably an AU. I see enough red in the fields where I suspect it has good luster, especially on the reverse. There seems to be visible wear on the face and crown. I wouldn't be surprised if it was graded at AU53-55. There is one big caveat though...this is the first Australian Penny I've ever looked at.

Seller's image. Once I get the coin in hand I'll give it a try.

YQQ... VF - even in somewhat more conservative Canadian grading? With 8 clearly defined high pearls???

    OTOH... no wear???! Wow.

looking at it, it was my first impression. Admit, I am not a good grader. when I buy I buy by eye appeal condition and price for the item. (and not at all interested in Aussie coins) so, please guys, forgive me..
I will dig out an old coin graded by our host...well, you guys will need to be the judge when I post it...

No worries. At least you had the guts to post.
