Is this a planchet alloy error on this quarter ?

I am not an error guy so I would appreciate an opinion. The coin has yellow toning but this copper like area does not appear to be sitting on the coin but rather just the surface itself. The obverse is also discolored but not as uniformly as this area on the reverse. It looks really cool in hand but I am not really sure if it is just surface damage or an alloy issue. Not using my camera but a borrowed one so hope this pic will do. I received this coin in change.

Environmental damage. It probably spent some time buried and then was cleaned with a chemical such as mix such as that found in Kaboom.

Environmental damage like the others have said. The copper-nickel alloy of the clad layers will easily react if left on the ground or other conditions

Yep.... environmental damage....Sometimes coins experience exposure to strange environments... for example, a coin dropped in a city park will look different from one lost in a farmed field.... different chemicals etc.. Cheers, RickO
