1884-S Morgan - What was it plated with?

Saw this one on the bay, and I'm curious as to what material it was plated in. Thoughts?

It's plated with ugly.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I doubt it's plated at all...probably just bad environmental or chemical damage.
Early American Copper, Bust and Seated.
Could be silver or nickel plate over the original toned. Have to see in hand as we like to say....
Well, just Love coins, period.
Could it be Mercury? Yikes, don't lick it.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
Upon seeing other mercury examples, I think this is correct.

Sometimes they put a coating on them if they made jewelry like belt buckles or money clips but have "No Idea" what may be on yours?

😂😂😂😂
Seriously it looks like a light coating of spray on bed liner topped off with that Walmart Krylon metallic spray paint.

I am not sure it was plated .... looks more like 'coated' with something... does it 'flake off' when probed at the border between the dark and light areas? Whatever it is, it is ugly and would be considered PMD....Cheers, RickO
Looks chromed. Not uncommon.

Does pvc eat silver?
Base metal counterfeit?
That's some kind of contact/chemical or galvanic reaction. The coins was stacked between something. Bottom of a shoebox in a dirty sock perhaps? LOL
Chrome plated for use in a western style belt buckle would be my guess.

Could be brushed, then lacquered. The black where the lacquer rubbed off?

I think chrome plating too...
