It’s not a fixed price, it’s an auction. So the buy price is unknown. And at $265 as of the time I’m writing this, I don’t think it’s a deal.

At current silver price, not really a good deal if you ask me. The high demand for silver and big premiums are not flowing over into stuff like 40% and 80% canadian. Refinery here in NC which is a bout 30 miles from this guy is only paying spot minus 5% at best. He(the seller) is about 35 Miles from me, the weather is cloudy with a few scattered showers, but an intense line of storms should move through between 6-9 am tomorrow.

40% Kennedys are often called the white elephants of junk silver.

  • tincuptincup Posts: 5,423 ✭✭✭✭✭

They may be the white elephants of junk silver.... but they do seem to sell pretty well on ebay.

If they are the "White Elephants" of Silver, then I guess the War Jeffs are the"Baby Elephants".

He calls them “The Last of the Silver Kennedys.” The fact they are 40 percent always slips his mind to mention.

And they aren't even right with that. The 1970-D is the last year of business strike "silver" production.

What is the name of baby elephant?
    calf
A baby elephant is called a calf. The word calf (plural is calves) is commonly used for young domestic cattle as well as the young of other large placental mammals including giraffe, manatee, rhino, whale, elephant, buffalo and many others.

    What about the 1976-S?

I have some ike 1976-s and Washington 1976-s 40 percent silver coins

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not a good buy at that price...and I do not seek the 40% halves for stacking. If one shows up in change or a roll, then I will keep it....Cheers, RickO

Did those 1976 Bi-Centennial silver halves even circulate? I never saw one in change. Yes, technically of business strike manufacture. But, if they weren't intended for immediate circulation at 50c face value, they aren't the same as the 1965-1970 issues. Were the 1976-s 40% halves issued in sets or bought directly from the US Mint?

They are actually 90% silver but clad. the interior is mostly copper and what knocks them down to 40%.

The 1970-D halves were "technically of business strike manufacture" just as the 1976 Bicentennial halves as they, too, were issued only in Mint Sets.

Actually, they are exactly the same as the 1970 issue which was only available in the Mint set.
