Need help with this silver medal!
Update 4/26/20:
Tried my luck at determining the specific gravity of it:
25.68 grams
2.53 added when weighed in water
specific gravity of 10.15 which looks like it may fall into the silver range? I'm new to the whole specific gravity thing
Original post below:
My buddy has this medal that looks like silver. I couldn't find anything online about it. Anyone know what this is? Also, idea on value? It's not perfect - note the scratches in the right obverse field and it may have some test cuts in the rim. It's roughly 1.5" in diameter and 25.5 grams (16.5 dwt).
Lettering on obverse looks to read: PIVS SEXTVS PONT MAX A XV
Reverse has what I think is TEMPLI SVBLAC CONSECRATIO
The Roman numerals look to be: MMDCCXXCLX the last two may be IX
Thank you for any help you can provide!

looks to be a medal for Pope Pius VI
Sugar magnolia blossoms blooming, heads all empty and I don't care ...
Pope Pius the sixth medal. Probably silver. In that condition, I'd guess $100 or so.
I'm guessing it is 1789 for the date "IX" on the end
in bronze

could be silver plated also
I agree with jmlanzaf. 1789 Pius 6th papal medal, probably silver.

Nice medal...have a jeweler check it with a sigma metalytics tester....That will identify the metal....Cheers, RickO
Do the ring test. Balance the medal on the tip of your finger near your ear and then tap the edge with a wooden pencil and listen to the ring. Silver has a very melodious ring unlike a copper, brass, bronze, or other base metal coin or medal.

I know the X-ray only reads the surface but here’s what it came up as...
He said it does have a nice ring to it, like silver. He took a video of the ping but not sure if there’s a way to post it.
Look at the ring ding at 6 o'clock on the obverse. Another indication it is not plated.

There are a couple of those on the rims... wondering if they're test cuts? There's one on the reverse too, around 11 o'clock
Thanks all for your help! Is there a good place to try moving it? Certain dealer?
Perform a specific gravity test. That will tell you what it's made of.
He said it is solid silver.

I tried clicking on what appears to be his website on my phone and it kind of seems hijacked and takes me to a site offering pills. I think i was able to get to it by accessing it elsewhere. Is there a good email address?

I don't know. That data looks like a thick silver plate. 98% is not a normal fineness. At the time, sterling (0.925) or 0.917 would have been normal. 98% seems a little too much for simple surface-enhancement of the silver concentration. And why is there 0.5% gold?????
Update here and up top:
Since I was trying out how to determine Specific Gravity for another piece, I wanted to try with this one. Here's what I came up with:
25.68 grams
2.53 added when weighed in water
specific gravity of 10.15 which looks like it may fall into the silver range? I'm new to the whole specific gravity thing though.
Nice!
