So I mainly collect Dallas Cowboys and the 1948 leaf boxing set. I've been working on putting it together graded for the past five years or so. I'm 11 cards away. I've been thinking about what else I'd like to collect. I don't really wanna do anymore complete sets. I also don't really do baseball, but I've been thinking of doing an all time greats collection. I don't wanna do the entire hall of fame. So in your opinion, what 20-30 guys should I focus on. From maybe the 1950s- the 90s. I'm on a budget, so I def won't be buying 52 topps mantles or anything. I also don't need super high grade, but would be ok getting as high of a grade as I can. But mainly, tell me the 20 or 30 guys I should focus on. Thanks!

If doing 30 guys I would go multi sport, and maybe pick a range of years that are relevant to you.
I can’t focus and always stray, but if I could, thats what I’d do
I'm gonna do multi sport for sure. But my football and basketball knowledge are good. Just trying to narrow down baseball a little.
To help the thought process start at each position Starting RH pitcher,LH pitcher,Reliever,Closer and DH plus the regular positions.
Then branch out to other favorite players.
Starting point:
Ted Williams
Willie Mays
Mantle (not 52T)
Hank Aaron
Frank Robinson
Koufax
Nolan Ryan
Tony Gwynn
Griffey
Pedro Martinez
I would love to see you include my favorite guy, Yaz.
Yaz Master Set
#1 Gino Cappelletti master set
#1 John Hannah master set
Also collecting Andre Tippett, Patriots Greats' RCs, Dwight Evans, 1964 Venezuelan Topps, 1974 Topps Red Sox
That's what I was looking for. Thank you. I'll also have to figure out the best card for each player that is within my budget.
You could browse the baseball HOF website and see if anything catches your eye. You have endless possibilities, especially if it is for fun and not for investment/resale. You might consider grabbing the card you like best for each of the HOFers/stars from the 50s-80s. many can be had very cheaply. That is essentially how I collected when I was younger. I was all about the visual aspect of the cards and not as much who was the best. Explains why I gravitated towards guys like Jim Palmer, Thurman Munson, Lou Brock, Brooks Robinson and others instead of even batter players from the same time frame (Mantle, Clemente, Aaron). I guess it also helped that I was on a tight budget then too, so getting more for my money with those guys that say getting 1 Clemente.
Check out the 1976 Bench card, for example. Iconic and cheap too. You don't just have to have rookie cards to enjoy star cards. I also love the 76 Aaron Record Breaker card. His last regular Topps set card was also in this issue, but it is boring to me. The RB is the way to go. Great card and about as affordable as they come.
Great suggestions. And it's def for enjoyment. Of course I don't mind if it also hapoens to be a good investment as well. I'll be doing graded. But I don't mind lower graded examples that look nice.
Great idea. I'm definitely not an authority and I'm all over the place with my collecting. Anyways, here would be my list:
VINTAGE
Mantle
Mays
Aaron
Clemente
Banks
Williams
Musial
Robinson-- Jackie, Brooks, Frank
Kaline
Koufax
Yaz
MORE MODERN
Ryan
Rose
Bench
Brett
Griffey
Seaver
Schmidt
Jackson
Jeter
Ripken
Always debatable..... Collect what you like, like what you collect and enjoy the ride. Have fun.
Yeah I definitely left some off, like Musial, Jackie Robinson and Ripken to name a few

Yep I agree.
I won this the other night. I don't mind doing raw if it's cheap enough. This was $10. I figure it should grade a 4 or 5. I understand after grading it's worth about what I have in it, but I'm ok with that. I go with how a card looks. I've also discovered I love the 59 topps baseball design. Watching a few Frank Robinson's from that year, graded and super affordable.
I know it would be more cards than you originally were looking to add, but you could choose a favorite card from each topps set. Say from 52 to 79. just an idea
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
That's a pretty good idea. I've thought of that too. I'm also going through a bunch of my childhood cards. Junk wax era. But I have some good stuff. Lots of topps finest. Upper deck sp. I'm sorting through that, figuring out what to grade and re sell to further fund the cards I do want.
You don’t have to do things listed in the registry. Some side projects I have going:
You guys always have some cool side collection themes going on. I originally thought of HOFers, but there are tons of HOFers. More in depth than I want to go. The 48 leaf boxing set is a set I always wanted as a kid. I collected and so did my uncle, he had some of the 48 leaf boxing cards that belong to his dad. I always said I wanna have the whole set one day. And here I am. 4 or 5 years later. 11 cards away.
Got this Robinson. Love the design and look.
500+ Home run club, 3000+ hits club, 300+ wins, 3000+ strikeout club. All time record club: Bonds,Ripken.

Thanks buddy. That helps. I've been working off the other list too. There are certainly names on your list that should be considered.
We’re all here because we love cards and the hobby at large so I think it’s our job to help each other.
Also, what about treating it like a 25 man roster? An actual ball club? Pitching staff, bullpen, positions, line up, etc. with another 15 player cards in reserve...
Whatever you do, it will be fun...

That's an interesting idea. And I am grateful for all of you guys on here. I've learned so much from all of you. I never was a baseball fan, but being a sports guy I of course know most of the names and what they did. And some of those 50s, 60s, and 70s card designs are just so gorgeous and iconic. It's for sure gonna be fun.
One of the more odd, yet interesting collecting themes I have come across is the guy collecting card #5, ANY card number 5 from any set! That is dedication to the number 5!!

MVPs are fun to collect too - esp in the MVP year; you can skip repeat winners to save $ - just a couple cards per year, though mostly great players.

Detroit tiger team sets from 1949 to 1960.
How about your own All Star game lineup? An American and a National League team, both with reserves. And don't forget the Manager, Coaches.
