The "Finding a 1943 Cent in Change" got me to thinking. What have YOU found in circulation?

braddickbraddick Posts: 23,110 ✭✭✭✭✭

For example, a 1970-S small date Lincoln? A 1950-D nickel? It doesn't have to be expensive, just a bit unusual. I have found a war nickel in change somewhat recently, yet it's been awhile since I found any silver.

Absolutely nothing of note in recent months. In addition, my Coinstar machine reject slots have been a complete zero for more than a month ... not so much as a badly corroded zinc Lincoln!

    All glory is fleeting.

My best circulation finds would be almost every Jeff from 1938 and up except for the silver and 50-d and like one other. I’ve gotten 2 buffs in change from a vending machine. A silver roosie from a vending machine and a few 40% silver halves. I don’t spend much time looking through change (more when I was a kid) but I do take a peek when something looks different.

My best finds have been Jefferson nickels. Some nice 1938 examples and in the more distant past a few war nickels.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I don't find things in circulation...I put things in circulation. Last were some 1964 proof cents.

1983 Doubled Die Reverse Lincoln Cent, about two decades ago cleaning out the change in my mom's car's cupholder. Must have used up all my luck because I haven't found anything since...

Nothing of note recently, a 1947 quarter, that's all.

Over the past 20ish years I have found too much to even begin listing it all out, one complete 1938-64 nickel set (yes even the 50-D) and I have another that is only missing a handful of coins. I must still have $30+ of 50's, 40's, 30's and buffalo nickels sorted by date and MM in coin tubes, minimal silver but a smattering of dimes and qtrs, some cool clips and other errors. I have also found a ton of impaired proofs mostly quarters but a handful of others as well, and the occasional foreign coins like Canadian dimes,

$100 IN WLH maybe 15 years ago. Not really a circulation find. My widmfe was doing business at her bank for work. Was there when the person brought them in, withdrew the $$ from our account and bought all of them . All were AG-F . Nothing special date wise. I think I sold them a couple of years later for maybe $300?

If you count CRH'ing then I could list quite a few here but my most recent find that was handed to me in a standard transaction came after I had spent an afternoon CRH'ing at a few banks around town. I and had been skunked and stopped at a sandwich shop for lunch. The clerk handed me a 1964 dime in my change.

A 1970-S cent, DDO-1 (FS-101) which PCGS graded AU-55, a few years ago in a bag of cents I inherited from my uncle.
Other than that, never found anything worth over $10.

Nothing particularly rare or noteworthy. A couple years ago when I was on hold with certified coins, I decided to buy a bunch of penny rolls from my local bank and try to populate a Dansco. One of the rolls was was entirely wheat cents with about half from the 1940s and a couple even earlier than that. I figured somebody had probably decided to cash in an old stash.

In the last 5 years, I got a 1943 steel cent in change at SFO. I also found a 1901 Indian Head Cent on the sidewalk. Many wheat cents, but I think it’s been close to ten years since I have found any silver.

I've not found much. But over the last few years I have added to circulation many dozens of wheaties, steel cents, buffalo nickels, early Jeffersons, and proof Lincoln memorials.

I cared for none of them. They weren't worth saving. Maybe someone else will get a kick finding one.

Now...what to do with thousands of gem red Canadian cents, 1960 to 1990, that came with that estate I bought. Will Coinstar accept them?

I have found a couple of wheaties over the last several months, and a silver rosie in the Coinstar... Probably the most notable recent find was a blank cent planchet in change...Now I have two (one from many years ago). Cheers, RickO

Are you asking recently or a total? Totally, I found a ton! Recently, I literally found this beauty in the coin star, about 5 days ago.

It's a 1964d wash. It looks as if it was minted today!
Now, all together, just in the coin star, I found many silver coins. Including an estimate of 5-8 Franklin's, 10 40% Kenn., 30-40 silver dimes, including 5 days ago, 20 silver washingtons. Who knows how many wheaties? All of no real value, except for the silver content. Many foreign coins and chuckie cheese coins. Now if you're talking in the wild, meaning in change or roll hunting. Some silver and various varities. Again, none of real value. But I wanted to mention my BEST ever find in circulation. I actually found this on the sidewalk. Told this story many times. Way back in 2000.
It was a 1999 Lincoln Cent. In pretty good shape. It turned out to be the 1999 wide am variety! I sent it in across the street. To my surprise it came back a 64RB. I end up selling it awhile ago. I got $200 for it. My best find thus far. I kick myself every day because I sold it. It was , remember, I found it in 2000. It was the first wide am cent certified in NGC's graded file! Oh well, still pleased I found such a gem. Thanks for asking. Every time I think of that time, it does make me have regrets but at the same time, it makes me happy. 😁

I found an AU 1950-D Jefferson in ca.2000 in Somers Point, New Jersey. I saw the 1950 and, somehow, knew it was from Denver before I turned it over. This is still in a blue Whitman folder 1938-61 that I started when I was about 12. It's missing only 3 pieces and I found them all from circulation.

I also remember finding a 1903 Liberty Head nickel in my dad's change jar, ca. 1995.

Todays mail included several charity plea envelopes. One had four loose cents with the donation request letter. 3 Memorials and one 1945 wheatie. Go figure, as the wheatie rev slid out onto the table, for a brief moment I thought....14-D? Yeah right. Peace Roy

In the early 1980's I worked in The OC as a young attorney. While making a court appearance at the main county courthouse in Santa Ana I stopped by the courthouse cafeteria and bought lunch. In the change I received was a 1924 D Lincoln cent in Fine condition. Pretty neat circulation find. It is sitting in a Lincoln Cent album 35 plus years later.

Lol. :D Come to think of it, it wouldn't surprise me if the quarter was originally in a 2x2 holder to begin with. Then taken out to throw in the machine! " Desperate times calls for desperate measures."

Just 2 Wheat cents. 44-P and 49-P. And silver nickel some months ago. Not worth much but still get a mild charge out of it. Reminds me when one could collect from circ. to help fill your blue Whitman folders.

When did Canada move away from 95% copper? If there is a high copper content, you might find someone hoarding them who might pay a few times face value for them. Not much on the individual basis, but it could add up in quantity.

Thanks for the advice, @cameonut2011. I pulled them out to refresh my memory. Only about 1200 of them, plus some miscellaneous brown.

It's not worth the effort to sell. I guess I'll see if Coinstar likes them.

I'm not familiar with the "w" quarters, but to hear told, I'd be surprised that one could amass 30 of each, or then just take them to the casino counting machine. Am I missing something?

Also, what's that "V75" stamped on the left side of the obverse?

The circulation find that got me started when I was 17 years old; an 1859 IHC, beat up, ugly, and nearly unidentifiable. Got it in change.

Through the years, I have found several silver war nicks, wheat backs, and a few Barber nickels.

Before you lose those in the big green machine, I'd check the varieties and the premiums for those early years. Some in a MS 64 or MS 65 run $300! Those are just the normal ones in uncirculated condition.$$$$
