Going through some of my grandfather’s coins

ThreeCentSilverFLThreeCentSilverFL Posts: 1,692 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hope you all are doing well. This is one of those times I like to go through my grandfather’s raw coins to feel nostalgic and a bit of comfort . Here are a few pics. Nothing special.

Wow! Those look nice. Couple of good looking Mercs. Neat that you have that link to your Grandpa.

I pulled all of the uncirculated Morgan’s and Peace dollars out of the old blue Whitman albums and put them in the air tight holders. Most are common dates. Still nice though.

You should have left them in the album. (I like album collections.)

They’re going in Dansco’s along with with the silver Washington quarters :)

PS the Whitman albums unfavorably toned a lot of his album coins :/

Do you know if your grandfather was a coin buyer, or did he pull those at a time when they could be pulled?
I remember going into a local bank in the early 60's with my mom. She bought some silver dollars for a buck a pop.
I suspect your grandfather was probably an active collector.

Those are special... Anytime you have coins that a parent, grandparent, etc collected - those have a story, a connection, a call to remember that person, something that one does not get from coins bought at a coin show or online.

My strategy is about collecting what I intend to keep, not investing in what I plan to sell.

That is great... and to have a 'multiple' generation collection is really cool... Do you know what the 'codes' are on the list? Cheers, RickO

@thebeav they pulled them from circulation or from the bank or otherwise, for the most part. In the Whitman albums however, I see some notations suggesting he purchased some. A few dollars is the most i've seen that he paid for a single Morgan, so that may help date it.

@ricko I don't know much about the notations, other than mint mark, and VS stands for Varsity Shop which must have been an old coin shop in KY. And yes, it is multi-generational, but also spans both sides of my family. Granny Ford filled Whitman albums also and I have her's too. In fact, my first set of Whitman albums from my youth were given to me by Granny Ford.

    @thefinn the gloves are soft...

PS I'm definitely interested in attributing the Morgans, I'll read up on the VAM site. I was there a while ago but never pushed it. I'm hoping there is a good initial pickup like the T-I alignment with CBH's on the maibock site.

A friend mentioned when they were cleaning up his fathers house after his death, they discovered shoe boxes full of coins under his bed.

Going to try and look at them this week. Got nothing but time...

    Thanks for sharing.

The gloves may be soft, but being made of fiber they can still scratch the surface of a coin. Professionales graders at the TPGs don't wear any glives. You lose your tactile sensation.

As important, cotton fiber gloves do shed loose fibers onto coin surfaces. I switched to nitrite gloves as I don't want to trap fibers in an airtite or flip protected coin. IMO. Peace Roy

@steelielee the photos above are the Unc examples I pulled from the albums. Below are the circulated examples, not including the ones still in whitman albums. These are rolled and packed securely in Granny W's Samsonite carryon :)

    Love those bank bags!

GSAs, OBW rolls, Seated, Walkers. Anything old and Colorado-focused, CO nationals.

Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.
