Well here it is. Finally a slabbed business strike buffalo nickel in ms69. But I am still waiting for one to be slabbed by ngc or pcgs.
I have no doubt it will happen one day. One will turn up that is so stunning that on grading day there will be no other choice than to award the coin an ms69

Amazing to see a MS69 Buffalo Nickel!
SGS used to be a very prolific TPG but I don't see them around anymore.
I don’t think you’ve seen an MS69 Buffalo Nickel, yet.

Nice!
Okay, MS69 Slab
Are the graders / owners of SGS known?
For some discussion on SGS, use the search function here. There are a number of threads but I haven't seen any info on who was running or grading at the company.
I have seen SGS slabs at coin shows when I lived in the PNW....That being said, that is not an MS69 Buffalo nickel...not even close...Cheers, RickO
The problem is people who have those slabs (any kind of slab) look at the PCGS price guide and expect people to pay that price for their coin, regardless of the coin’s actual merit.
Star Grading Service (SGS) is not a TPG company anymore. Then again, I don't think they ever were a true TPG, but slabbed and sold their own coins. There was a seller on eBay (I believe out of Ohio) that was the source of the SGS coins. I have not seen them for a while.

If you get it to cross I will be impressed

Might make an interesting experiment.

It is odd there are no 69s out of all the 1938 that where saved not one higher than a 68+?

Spots/discoloration on this coin would limit its grade.
Nowhere near 69.
(You can insert your own joke here )
Most of all the SGS coins that I have seen were graded MS70 (whether they were or not) so this nickel must not have met their high grading standards of a MS70. so this could be "special" Just saying! Enjoy it anyway..
If we were playing GTG I would probably be at a 64.
The slab appears to have gotten the care it deserved.
Send it to CAC.
I have handled hundreds of SGS slabs. I dont know if I can say more than 1-2 would have crossed at the same grade at pcgs or ngc
Among those hundreds would be dozens of ms70 pieces that all were ms66-67 quality
Aren't they the ones who graded every proof coin pr70?

I thought PCGS only accepted NGC for crossovers.
Crack and submit, sure- just not in that slab for crossover.

They take them all. https://www.pcgs.com/crossover
“Your pre-graded and sealed coins from a third party service such as NGC, ANACS, ICG or other for PCGS Crossover”
There’s no reason for them to limit it if they can safely remove the coin. But I would also be realistic about a crossover when it comes to the cross at grade level option.
I collect the fly-by-night TPGS holders after the coins are removed for grading. Just did a SGs this minute. 1976-S PR-70 CAM (haze, prints, debris particles all over the Obv./reverse nice) became 67 after conservation.
This SGS slab has a white label w/blue mustache design. Two gold labels (top and bottom) keep it sealed.
Send it in for a crossover and make sure to check the box for same grade or higher.
look like a nice AU-58.
BHNC #203
and I thought the name of the company was SGS MS70
They were, at one time headquartered in Mansfield, Ohio. Their grades are meaningless.
The owner wasn't the friendliest person (right, Tom?)
I'm happy to say I cherrypicked some good stuff at his shop-an XF 1857 FE cent clashed with a Seated 50c; several 1970-S small date proof sets; an1861-O 50c struck by the Confederacy at the New Orleans Mint and more that I can't recall as this was 20+ years ago. This was before he kicked BUFFNIXX and I out of the shop.
I've still got a box of SGS Roosies MS70. When building a raw BU Roosie set I must have bought 40 or so off ebay because they were so cheap, they sold them in 10 year sets. Long time ago, 5 or more years. Of course none were near MS70.

YES RON I remember that. Actually I think I was the one behind some of their display cases and they told me to leave.
And we booked out of there in a hurry! I think they also may have figured out we were a couple of cherrypickers.

I think he was too dumb to suspect anything. Any "professional" coin dealer should know a small date '70-S cent from a large date.
