I would say it is a die chip, but agree with above, the shape is not typical. Cheers, RickO

Since this is the last year they produce the quarter with the Eagle. Do you think that it will cover the cost of the slab, error department by PCGS.

I also agree that it's a die chip. As others have said, the shape is a little unusual. The vast majority of die chips are considered minor errors and small ones rarely add any additional value to the coin. No point in having it certified, since it’s only worth face value. Put it in a 2x2 and add it to your collection

    I'm with the die chip.

I’m no expert, but the "hole" and overall shape seem to eliminate a die chip. Is it just me, or does the shape look an awful lot like a D? Coincidence?

I wonder if an MS-70 or acetone bath would help the overall appeal. Also, if the D falls off, mystery solved. It’s different, and I like it the more I look at it - but asking us coin folks if we like coins is kind of a sure thing.

Can’t wait to hear what our resident experts think.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

Don't think it will fall off in an acetone bath, metal flow shows it as part of the coin. It does look a lot like a D but it looks more like the shape of a D mint mark from the 60's, it is also on a P mint coin. An unusual shaped chip that looks a lot like a D. ;)

Your photos are very good, there is no need for more.

    Fun find :)

A short acetone soak may remove some of the stuff on the obverse but not sure about the reverse. If you plan on putting it in a 2x2, then a quick soak is probably a good idea, but don't be disappointed if some of those stains aren't removed.

Even though it is the last year of the eagle reverse, the 1998-P is very, very common.

It does look like a D mintmark but it's much too small to be one. Compare the size to the "P" on the obverse.
