I'm pretty happy I've been able to garner 2 complete sets of 2019 W quarters from rolls :)

I intend to build set's for my kids and Grandkids.

So...be interested in opinions about what should do with these circulated coins in terms of storing, mounting, grading...?

(sorry the pics are sideways...my I-phone is driving me nuts with file transfer!!!!).

You could Put them in Saflips or equivalent. Or maybe a capital holder. That is cool that you’ve found 2 sets in rolls. How many rolls have you searched in doing so?

I’ve only found 2 coins in rolls.

That's cool and I'm sure a lot of work went into the effort.
Around these parts, I have yet to see a "River of no Return" coin of any mint, and I have seen only 3 of the San Antonio coins.
Strangely, 2 of the 3 Texas coins were P mints, which usually don't show up here.
The War in the Pacific D mint were slightly abundant for a week or so but they have also dried up.
I suspect a local bank had a few boxes.

Answer: how many rolls? A lot. :o I find that usually I have to go through about 60 rolls to find a coin, but sometimes you get lucky :). I have about 20 coins overall. Actually I think it's picking up a bit of late as coins go out to circulation and come back. I know of one guy who actually doesn't even look through a box unless it's one of the magical "all new coins" boxes...keeps bringing boxes back to the bank till he get's one, then he will find up to a couple of dozen in one box...burns me with envy, but I don't have the time or resources to go at it that way.

Thanks for the recommends on storing/displaying. Do you know of a way to remove any oils, dirt etc. before storing these to keep them from tarnishing?

Yes, I feel very fortunate to have had the results I've gotten!

One of the W quarters I found had some gunk on it. Looked like black tar or other gunk. I soaked it in acetone for a bit and it came off but left a mark underneath. Stuck it in a Saflip and moved on.

Pardon my ignorance but what are saflips and why do you recommend them?

He's finding truly uncirculated ones (in boxs of new coins) and you are find coins that entered circulation and made it back to the recycled coin rolls.

Repetition of ignorance is ignorance raised to the power two.

Yes that’s correct. Hence my burning envy👿!

@nickelsciolist....Soaking in acetone will remove organic residues... If they have been there a while, then the exposed surface will look different....Tarnish happens due to environmental exposure, so putting the coins in airtites is the best bet - those are hard plastic 'clip together' containers that hold one coin each. Google coin supplies, you will find them...Cheers, RickO

Get them all graded and a "W" mint registry started. We are all novices in the modern era. Preservation first. And don't think of the cost. Do what you do, for enjoyment. From one novice to another. It's the best hobby still.

^. Keep in mind, our children and grandchildren rarely care about what we leave them, or what we do. On that note:...spend time with them. ( after the virus subsides, of course)

    WOW ... that's nice!

  • I have found W quarters both ways and have 20 San Antonio Ws and 40 War in the Pacific Ws to trade or sell anybody interested?

  • mgkmgk Posts: 34 ✭✭

Congrat's I put my bu roll finds in these for now but if possible i will have some graded in pcgs muti coin holders when the series ends in feb 2021.

My opinion, do not get circulated coins graded, they won't grade high and will cost you more than worth. I like what mgk proposed, good recommendation in plastic holder....

On a side note, for the upoming 2020 W's to be releaed. Get on the interest and google the 2020 images, cut and paste the images into a word or power point document and print. Cut out the image as they are released, put your name and contact information on them. and take them to banks and local stores and ask that hey contact you if they get any new (2020) quarter boxes in (you may have to take repeat trips to remind them) - Get new quarter mint boxes, and search for the W's. Getting them first hand from rolls adds more value to the coin, and you have the pleasure of finding and taking an uncirculated quarter into your collection. GL

Sounds good on paper but unless you are personally close to your banker/teller they will not normally do this for you.

@derryb, It worked for me, I closed out at 199 UNC W's. Just be kind and courteous and I did say that you will need to return and remind them. Thanks Joe

Proof is in the pudding as they say. I'm going to give this a try. I've been working at this a while and have about 25 coins, Mr. D is at 8 times that number if my math is correct. Not sure who'se spent more time at it (and circumstances as they are right now we are all taking a hiatus from bank visits, at least I sincerely hope) but I'm going to give that approach a try! At several banks the tellers know me by name when I walk in. They will order boxes for me and hold them etc.

Thanks everyone for the advice! This is great.

I will miss the big opportunity like I had last year living in one of the 33 areas that had these quarters. I found many hundreds of them. We shall see how many W's show up in boxes this year.

@Nickles, actually not only the banks, but I got several boxes from my local Safeway. The customer service clerk knows me very well and would call me when new boxes would come in - I got many boxes of UNC quarter boxes there. Have bank rolled quarters with you - You give them bank rolls in exchange for the box of rolls that they give you. GL Joe

Nice! Never would have thought of that, I figured all new coins went right to the banks.

So...what is this about the "33 areas"? How do we know this?

The mint only put the 2019 W's in 33 cities in the US. Coin world supplied the whole list of where they were distributed. In 2020 coin world said the mint will be distributing the W's more evenly through the whole run of quarters.

I picked up this box in anticipation of 11 W mint (sadly no Tuskegee Airmen) but it worked to display the 10 and a W obverse.

These 10 sets use the 2009 Territorial Quarter lenses. The 6 Quarters are the p/d/w/unc s/proof clad s/ proof silver s.

These 10 sets are the Capital 5 Quarter set holder. The Quarters are the p/d/w/proof clad s/proof silver s.

I still have over 100 loose W's and a few unc S's quarters that I have set to put in holders. I also have around 60 graded W quarters that I decide not to sell and keep. I believe as long as you try to protect them in a holder they should be OK. I found the 6 quarter holders on Ebay and had enough for the 11th W quater, but that did not happen, So those extras have been given to other collectors on the forum. Your sets look nice. :)

Years later someone can still benefit from other's ideas. Maybe someone is out there with coins still loose, in flips, or 2x2s that could benefit. Also picking up the thread keeps attention on the W mint quarters and I'm always for that.
