Barber 50c - GTG

PedzolaPedzola Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭✭✭

Finally picked up a barber half for my 20th century type set. Thought I'd share here for some opinions.

Feel free to guess the grade, or since I am posting the trueview you can cheat and look up the cert.

First thought is 62 due to the hits in prime focal area. Second is shot 63. TrueViews tend to hide a lot. Hard to gauge luster on either.

Beautiful coin! I'd guess MS64. The marks are somewhat distracting, but it's a fairly large coin where a few more ticks are allowed.

It has to be either a 63 or 64.

    I'll choose 63.

I'd think 64 would be the ceiling based on the obverse marks, and I'll give it that grade based on the overall appearance. A bit lower wouldn't surprise me.

The coin has a nice cartwheel luster in hand with an interesting sort of mottled color if you look at the right angle. (But mostly looks bright white). Hard to capture in pictures.

The coin fits the overall look I was searching for. Plenty of participants so I'll hold off on posting the grade.

A couple more pics of the obverse:

First thought was 63. But maybe 64.

Looks like a 64.... If the marks are not as obvious as in the magnified pictures, I would guess 64....if obvious, then likely lower. Cheers, RickO

It has the "look" and overall surface fabric of an MS64.

For those who didn't look up the cert, MS64:

Happy to have this one in the collection, I think it looks good.

Based upon the images, I agree with the grade, as stated earlier.

Barber half dollars have been a major focus of mine for over two decades and the true gem and near-gem pieces are really difficult to find. What I think many folks over-react to are hits or stray surface scrapes that might not be too deep. These are big coins that weigh a bit and took some large hits. In my opinion, the entirety of the coin's surface has to be taken into account and this coin has really nice skin with apparently terrific mint frost. That goes a long way in how these are graded, in my opinion, and also in how nice they appear in-hand.

After all my years of looking at these coins, I have only kept a single MS65 and a single MS66 for myself along with two circulated examples. I think yours is a very nice coin.

Thanks for the insight TomB. Would love to see your "keepers" after so many years of collecting them.
