S.S. Republic - 1861-O Seated Liberty Half W-13 Confederate States Issue. Love it! Couldn't leave without it.

Well, there's no chance my LCS would have something like this. Mostly that's because I don't have an LCS.

However, it is enormously cool. Paying the ransom to acquire it might present a bit of an issue.

Ummmm..........Yeah........It would be pretty tough to turn my back on that one....

    Really NICE!!

Nice. I'm still waiting for half dimes which were on the inventory lists.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I'm usually not one for all that stuff either but it actually fits great with my office decor. Everything ends up in my safe deposit box but I have to enjoy this one for a while.

Very nice, I like it and cool presentation for the coin. I have a few of these and mine also show the yellowing inside the slab around the coin, I wonder why that is?

Not sure, I noticed that also. Which coins/dates do you own? Were yours purchased originally from Odyssey or on secondary market?

I have the 1860 US issue, 1861 Louisiana and Confederate issues and the later two have distinct yellowing. The coins do not appear to be any worse as it just shows on the white insert. Mine were gifted so I am guessing secondary market.

Not sure if it has to do with something in the "conservation" process that may have caused the yellowing. Not too distracting to my eye. Nice piece of history

I have shied away from shipwreck coins because I know so little about the condition and restoration process... but that is really cool.

That is really cool. My LCS sells polished Morgan Dollars as "BU" and silver ASEs.

That coin survived in a salt water environment quite well. Even though cleaned it still has market appeal because of the shipwreck connection.

    All glory is fleeting.

NGC Does break down condition somewhat in the slab description by using "Shipwreck effect" or the use of c thru a descriptors to reflect the amount of restoration

No doubt some restoration was involved but many did not survive as well as this one when you look at some of the coins similarly slabbed.

I wonder why some survived much better than others? After all that time in salt water you would expect considerable surface deterioration.

Not sure but if you look through examples on auction sites, a number of them have pretty severe surface problems even after restoration. I'd love to drop mine on a scale and get a proper weight. I suppose that could be done with a little research on slabs and some math.

That is a nice display for the coin. Not an interest of mine, but I know many collectors like these...both silver and gold. Cheers, RickO

If you can find a shipwreck coin that has good detail and the surfaces aren’t too shiny or granular, then that is a good purchase, especially with the history attached to it.

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍
