It's environmental damage with crud and corrosion on the surfaces. Drop it in mineral oil for a few days (or weeks) and then pick the crud off with a rose thorn or something similar and you will see it detach, but the underlying surface damage will be revealed.

Corroded, unfortunately. @TomB's advice is good, but think of it as an automotive tune-up for a rust bucket.

Given the overall condition of G, try soaking it in H2O2 for a day or two. Live a little. Understanding crud is a good thing. Peace Roy
