A mysterious & elusive DDO

When I coin roll hunt quarters, most of the dates with potential varieties go into separate piles to be searched en masse after I have accumulated a bunch of them.

Whenever I go through a new batch of 1965 quarters, I ask myself, "do I want to try looking for the DDO-003, again?". Looking at the photos on VarietyVista, I was never exactly sure what I was looking at. Circulated 1965 quarters are typically worn and battered, but the discovery coin for this variety is particularly weathered. Is what I'm seeing due to wear and/or oddly placed hits, or is it die doubling? I was never really sure...

As to whether to look for the DDO-003 or not, often I've said, "no - I'm not motivated to look for that, today"! Last night, I said, "yes", and as luck would have it, I found one... B)

Honestly, my hat is off to both Joe Miller and James Wiles for discovering and evaluating this variety, as they were able to see beyond the condition of the coin to the DDO underneath:

Now that I've seen the variety in hand, I would say these are the best pickup points for the DDO:

In the Date:

Doubling and notching on the arm of "5"
Doubling on the loops of "9" and "6", most visible inside the counters.

In "LIBERTY":

Notching on the middle and lower arms of "E"
Extra thickness in "RTY"

In Washington's Queue:

"Split ends" on the middle hair curl
.
.
The moral of the story is - learn the varieties and look for all of them! When I started my CRH journey, not long ago, I assumed the 1965 varieties would be the last ones I'd find, given the enormous mintage for that date. Over the past year, I've actually found 2 of the major 1965 varieties (this one, and the FS-102 DDO). You just never know what will turn up!
