What is the difference between DDO and machine doubling and how to tell the apart? Double Dies and machine double look the same to me. Hope some experts can show us the difference and some pictures..

It depends on the specific double die coin, but generally speaking, double die is so obvious you think your vision is blurry for a moment. On the Lincoln cents for example (the sought after 1955 and 1969 S) the word Liberty is full on blurry because the doubling is that dramatic.

Sadly, we have some current members on this board who have been told many times their coins are NOT the double die coins but they are among those trying to sell the fakes on Ebay.

Do a search here on the forum - there are lots of threads with links and tutorials.

Generally speaking, MD is "flat, shelf-like". Once you learn the difference then it will be easy to tell. Prior threads have some pretty good images to show the differences.

I yield to more experienced members with better technical knowledge, but a quick and dirty method is look at the serif (letter or date)...

A doubled die will exhibit mushy details up to extreme doubling but the key is to look at the feet of the letter R (for example) as it will have separation or a split.

Machine Doubling is more of an exact copy.

There are some extreme examples of both in the Indian Cent series that can give you a better comparison.

I am glad you are asking for help.... For new collectors, this issue can be quite confusing. However, there are enough sites available, and prior threads here, as well as the links above, to help you understand the difference. Once learned, you will not confuse the two again. Cheers, RickO

I have mechanical doubling obviously, looks cool to me, but not valuable. Wexler and Stanton had very good material explaining the differences.
I really appreciate all of you who responded and helped put me on the right track and teaching this old guy a new skill.
this forum has a plethora of information for newbies and the pros.
